Naked Goldwing advice?

Hello!

My apologies to any die-hard Goldwingers out there who may wince at my question, but… my uncle wants to give me his 1983 GL 1100. It has 93000km on it (about 50k miles). My question is… I would like to convert this bike into a naked Goldwing cafe. I own a few bikes but am not very mechanical but I am game to try. What's involved? Any advice for a newbie? Trying to avoid being the stupid newbie and ask stuff like "It's just taking all the fairings and bags and chrome off, right?" but… is it? Right? Ha ha. :cover:

From the looks of this bike, I think I would want to:

- Change the pipes configuration
- Have the seat re-upholstered to be a bit lower and more of a cafe look
- Change the handlebars to be a straight config… would I need risers to reach the bars?
- Do I need to re-mount the headlight? What's under the fairing?
- Front signals… They are inside the fairing right now… buy aftermarket? Or could I dig the signals out of the fairing (likely not)

Any advice? What am I missing? Any links to any docs or other helpful online info?

NO insult intended to Goldwings. I think the engine in a naked configuration looks gorgeous and I'd be really interested in seeing how this bike would ride with less stuff on it.

Regards
C5

1st an foremost C5 there will be no offense taken by any of us here to my knowledge. Being a motorhead of sorts I always enjoy projects. 2nd Welcome to the GWOF from the Keystone State of Pa.

We have a member who created a bobber from a Wing a short time ago. He is a good guy & I'm quite sure if you had any specific questions you could send him a PM & equally sure he would respond when time permits.

Here is a link to his project & good luck.

Welcome to the GWOF, catsfive! Heck, it's YOUR Wing, so you can do whatever you want with it!! Just keep us posted and post photos, please! Like Fossil Bill, I enjoy following a good project.

Yeah, deathwing has a cool project going on. To answer your question, there was a headlight mount under my GL1100's Vetter fairing but it was originally sold as a standard I believe, but you can get the headlight mounting "saddle" that bridges between the two forks easy enough if it isn't there when you remove the fairing. A fella here has "tons of GL1100 parts" and I've bought some. His handle is Eephus1985. Good luck with your project!

Bottom line: The GL1100 is an easy bike to work on and very tough, so hard to damage it no matter what you do, unless you set the timing belts wrong. That'll do it!

hello catsfive, welcome to GWOF. the good news is that you are working with an 1100 wing so removing the bags, fairing and related parts will be a start to getting your wing nekked. unlike the 1200 wing the 1100's had everything added on so just takeit off, take it all off :)

Hi, guys, wow, cool, thank you for the friendly introduction, guys. And, OK, so y'all are not worried that I'm sullying your awesome Goldwing's reputation, stripping her down and parading her up and down the streets without anything on. :)

I live in Calgary, Canada, and our riding season is a bit short up here. Please pardon my "picking sides" and all, but up here we have a lot of "fake machismo" with dudes buying Harleys and riding LOUD LOUD LOUD up and down my street and I really am attracted to Honda because the engine seems (just as you say) really bullet proof and am not partial to V-twins, plus I like the big bulky look of the Honda four here, and I ride a 2006 BMW R12GS, so I like a heavy, low-slung bike like the Goldwing, too. My idea is... well, how offensive can I make it? I don't want attention for myself, though... other than the fun of having something naugty and maybe a bit mean to ride. :)

From the pictures and the parking lot wings that I've seen, the Aspencade seems like a lot of fibreglass and plastic (though, I think it looks really fitted and cool, just, it should stay together as an Aspencade). Seems to me an Interstate seems to be the best one since it looks like a motorcycle that was a motorcycle first, and then Honda dressed it up with all those goodies that I'd like to take off. I saw one today (same colour, too) that was stripped down, but it had the air-ride shocks still on (no!), and the seat (chop that!) and the fenders (remove!) and the original tires (no! Go fat!) and...

Thank you for the tips, guys. I'll look into buying this one that has 58000km and is $1500. It's burgundy.

Anyone with a naked wing?

Well... After seeing the deathwing project I am pretty sure I won't be tackling one. I LOVE what folks can do with one tho. And now I have a new appreciation for what it takes to do it. I always wanted to learn how to weld. So maybe I'll get some lessons and feel better about myself one day. Lol

Enjoy whatever you do with one and post pics as you go.

Welcome from Mississippi. I sure like those who are willing to keep an older bike on the road. Please keep us in the loop and provide some pictures.

I've looked with Google a bunch of times and there a lot of really cool bobbers out there. But this is consistently one of my favorites!

I know this is a couple months late, but I say "go for it!" I live a bit over 5 hours north of you so welcome neighbour. Here's a piece of inspiration for your project, I think it was trike lady that first posted this creation for us. While it's obvious which is the GL1800, the resemblance to the cBR is unmistakeable. The builder claimed to have used a CBR front end, but I'm pretty sure that's actually a set from a ZX-10 Kaw, the fairings are modified CBR though:
