Can't find 10W30 API SJ?

So, I go to check my oil and it's low. I've been riding the same oil for just about 4K miles so I figure I'll just change it.

The Owners Manual says use 10W30 API SJ oil. I can't find that in any store. I haven't gone to the dealer yet, because I was hoping I could get the Motorcycle oil somewhere else and save a buck or two. I went to Autozone, Advanced Auto, Pep Boys, and Walmart. The only motorcycle oil I saw was 10W40 and 20W50. The 10W40 says it "exceeds API SG/SH/SJ". Not sure if that's okay or not.

I figure I could order the 10W30, but after the shipping I probably wouldn't save anything. Is the dealer my only off the shelf option?

i go to autozone and get Castrol 10w 40 motorcycle oil, synthetic for the mighty ST 1300 and dino for the wing, 10w 40 will not hurt your bike

I've used Mobil1 10w30 in all the Wings I've owned and the 85 had +180k on it when I sold and it had never had any major work do t to the motor and my 89 just turned over 133k and it doesn't leak or burn any oil and the shifting is smooth.

So, I should pay no attention to the API spec in the Owner's Manual? I did see that Rotella full synthetic at Walmart, but I because it didn't say API SJ, I didn't give it to much thought. The Owner's Manual says you might experience clutch issues if you use an oil that doesn't have that spec. Is that not accurate?

Another vote for Rotella T6. I have used it in my 2012 for over 40K and love it. The API changes all the time. The T6 is JASO MA rated, that is what you are looking for. Also not energy conserving. That one is bad for your clutch.

10W40 is actually the most recommended weight by Honda, with 10W30 as a go to second choice. I much prefer the 40 myself, but then I'm an Amsoil addict too...:wink2:

have to be careful about the energy conserving and the other warning like that. Like someone said earlier, will take out your clutch. I use Castrol 10w40 dino oil

Thanks everyone for the replys and tips. I ended with a semi-synthetic blend 10W40 from Honda. The price per quart was the same as the prices all of the other products mentioned, which surprised me.

Rotella T6: you have a lot of people that use rotella t6, i've tried it in the mighty ST 1300 and the shifting was not very good, seeing that my wing has hydraulic lifters I won't use any synthetic engine oil in it. tried it ( synthetic oil, mobile 1 and amsoil for bikes ) and it sounded like the lifters were not pumping up. you could try rotella on your next oil change and see if it works for you

I would want to see a copy of the page in the owners manual... I would think that if it says SJ, it is preceded with SH written as SH/SJ which means it must carry the SH rating as well..

I know that I would not use anything with just an SJ Rating
