Greetings fellow wingers. I hate asking another stator related question. However, I just want to be sure before I go to the expense of replacing. A little background: I bought the 85 LTD a couple weeks ago from a gentleman in Baltimore, Md. At that time, he told me that he didn't have the time to work on restoring it. However, a brand new stator came with the bike. I called him back and asked 'how did u know the stator was bad'...his answer 'because the bike keeps discharging'. My question is before I go to the big expense of replacing the stator (knowing engine must be removed), could something else be discharging the bike instead of a stator problem. Any suggestions of what to check would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks to you all....

Yes, you could have a bad diode in the regulator/rectifier.
Charge the battery and record the voltage and unplug the r/r and if there is no discharge of the battery in the morning, you found the problem.
