My guess would be the only way to know for sure would be the VIN #.

Norm, I know this may not be as easy as asking, but probably the best way to assure that you are getting the right info would be to call local Honda dealer & have them verify it through database. I'm not quite sure how to interpet the sequence either.

look on the plate on the head tube and the year of manufacture should be on it

Norm:

GL1-1 in the VIN means you have a first year GoldWing.
GL1-2 would be a '76, GL1-3 would be a '77, GL1-4 would be a '78, and GL1-41 is a '79.

Engine numbers go the same way, but with an E in them (GL 1E-1 for a '75, and so on)
Engine numbers and VIN numbers don't match numerically. What I mean is if your VIN and engine numbers are the same, then you have a very rare machine.
