Was wondering do the volt meters wear out got. 1200 Ltd with a diigital meter off the battery it reads 12.5 at idle give or take a little but the one on the bike scares me it reads 15 plus I've seen it as high as 17 is this some thing to check into further or is it normal the gauge is breaking down in side cause you can't see all of the numbers pieces are missing if you run your hand across the meter most of the number is readable.

Doubt that it should read over 14 at 2000 rpm or above, but I doubt it's the meter. You could test it with a separate meter to be sure.

at idle you should see a low voltage cause there is no charging taking place until about 2000rpm so at idle your running on battery power alone

When I rev the engine both meters show a spike the one off the battery goes up to 14 plus the one on the bike reads something's different almost every time never over 17 though

the meter on the bike is way off. at 17 volts you would cook the battery

My 1200 reads 14.4v at 2000 RPM on the battery. The shop manual says up to 14.5v is acceptable.
