Just guessing, but I'd say you have to take off the guards. Been a while since I looked close at an 1100, but you might have to take the lowers off first to get at the bolts of the guards too.
You have to check the clearances when the engine is cold (35*-95*f) Clearances are: intake-0.01mm/0.004" exhaust-0.13mm/0.005". You have to align the #1 piston to TDC before starting so I'd have a shop manual handy. PM me if you don't have access to one and I can send you the necessary pages.
