What is it? It's your battery. When charging or discharging a lead acid battery produces hydrogen gas. If there is a source of ignition the batt can explode. At best, this can make a mess or leave you stranded. Worst case someone gets hurt. Battery acid in the eye is nothing to laugh about.

There are some things you can do to prevent this. When jump starting any vehicle mske the last connection to ground away form the battery. When charging unplug the charger before connecting it to or removing it from the battery. Make sure all battery connections are tight and free of corrsion. Don't be a statistic.
