1981 GL 1100

When I started it yesterday the starter just stopped

Now all i get is one big CLICK at the solenoid

I took a jumper wire from the hot side to the bolt on the starter and nothing but a spark from the wire touching...no spin no nothing

could it be anything else besides the starter?

Have you put the bike in high gear to see if the engine isn't locked up?

I am 99.5% sure it is the original, the bike only has 34k on it

I changed the timing belts 2 weeks ago and the were the original Honda belts

It turned over yesterday for just about 4 seconds and then just stopped, and then nothing but one big click at the solenoid. but starts fine on a roll off

Shouldn't starter spin/engage if i put a jumper wire on starter? it does nothing

Also u cant here a click at the starter but if you put you hand on it u can feel it the BIG click "sound" is at the solenoid

I did notice twice last week when engine hot, if i shut bike off and then tried to re-start right away the starter would drag REAL REAL slow and wouldn't start the bike... I would have to roll off . But when cool it wouldn't drag

Have you taken the starter relay out and bench tested it?
How old is the battery?
I'm going to scan a diagnostic flow chart and will post it shortly.

If you go from the hot leg (the heavy red one from the battery) on the starter relay to the starter side of the relay and make an outside connection the starter should turn.
Lowes, Home Depot, Radio Shack and Harbor Freight have test meters. It depends upon how much you want to spend and the degree of accuracy.

I took jumper cables and the battery from my boat

Hooked the cables to the battery and Grounded the Neg side good to the bike frame

then touched the hot to the starter post and got nothing but a spark

did not spin over at all or make any sound other then the spark

Sounds like the starter is no good.
May just have worn brushes or just needs a good rebuild.

When you remove the starter, bench test it.
The only part to worry about is the starter clutch.

It's sad you cannot just buy the planetary gears, you have to buy the entire starter.
You'll be better off with a new one.
