Why could not Honda have done the VTX clutch set-up like
they did on my Goldwing ? WITHOUT the cable !!!

Being I live right on the Mississippi River. I cross the bridge several times a day. No big deal. BUT, for the last few days. They have been inspecting the bridge that comes into Louisiana. So that leaves on only one lane, and it gets congested where they funnel the traffic into one lane to cross.
On the last hill, on the Mississippi side, before you hit the bridge is a traffic light. About 1/2 mile before that light, ........
IT HAPPENED. Clutch Cable Snapped. And at the worst time, worst place, and all that traffic. Well, I was rolling, changing gears when it happened. So I slowed down, knowing I can't stop ( or sure as hell don't need to ), until I get to the Louisiana side of the river. Light was Red, traffic backed up. So I just putted between traffic, between cars like a crazy man. And come within about 50 yards of the light, and it turned GREEN. Took off like hell and went threw light leaving cars behind. Oh no, traffic ahead is at a dead crawl for it's one lane going across bridge. So I come on down to 1st gear, and left wayyyyyyyyyy enough room between me and the vehicle in front of me. All away across the bridge this way. When I got to the other side, I was in the safe zone. Once on the Louisiana side, I run a little and when I come to stop sign, I would get down to a crawl and take off again. Done this all the way in.

I was so nervous, for knowing if I ever had to knock the bike in neutural and come to a stop on that bridge, I could never get it rolling fast enough to knock it into a gear without tearing up something or it taking off taking a chance of running into bridge or some other vehicle.

I ordered TWO cables. One to replace. One to keep in saddlebag. I don't ever want to go threw that situation again. Felt like I was dead sticking the machine in.....

I have a Suzuki volusia as well as the Wing and one of my big fears is having the clutch cable break at a bad time, although I can't really think of a good time to have it break unless it was while sitting in the garage which is very unlikely.

Your story would be my nightmare if the clutch cable were to break, glad it worked out OK for you.

I suspect the reason more bikes do not have hydraulic clutches like the gold Wings would be cost. JMHO.

I agree with BEVMAN, having a hydraulic clutch kit will surely cost more compared with cable type. Also maintenance is a must not like with cable w/c is almost maintenance free.

Hydraulic clutch requires maintenance. You have to change the fluid just like your suppose to change the brake fluid. Lots of stories on the GW board about the hydraulic clutch not working properly. A lot of guys bleed it as soon as they get the new bike home.
Your clutch cable needs to be lubed on a regular schedule, and you should check it for wear, just like tires and anything else that wears out,
A good thing would be to change it once in awhile to be on the safe side. Not a big job and cheap insurance.
