I have a 79 GL1000 and i went for a quick ride today and the O-ring on the shifter where it goes into the bottom end is leaking. does anyone know if I need to split the case to fix this or can it be fixed from the outside?
I can only speak for the 1500. But it can be replaced from the out side. Heard of guys removing the shift lever and using a sheet metal screw inserted into the metal of the seal and pulling it out with a pliers ( on a 1500).
My 1500 started to drip a few years ago. I took a wooden dole and hammer and gently tapped all the way around it and reseated it. hasn't leaked since. Might want to try that before replacing.
Just an idea.
