They aren't a gimmick, they help reduce the play in the shift shaft, helping reduce missed shifts and seal wear.

For whatever it's worth, I bought one of the cheap eBay/Amazon units and spent the better part of a week fiddling with it trying to get it aligned right, but couldn't get rid of a little bit of binding on either the up or downshifts. Took it apart and reassembled it probably two-dozen times.

Eventually gave up and ordered the pricier "real" unit from Cyclemax with the bushing; I dunno if it's the bushing, different dimensions, tighter tolerances or what but despite them looking almost identical the "real" unit from Cyclemax lined up on the first time and has had zero binding.

Your mileage may vary, of course. I think they're good to have.

Thank you for your input. I just discovered the device last night and didn’t do a search for alternatives. One of the reviews said they had to do some grinding on an adjacent part to make it fit which says a lot about the engineering. Really appreciate you going out of your way to respond and save me the frustration. I’ll pay up for the “real” part from Cyclemax and save big on the back end.

You still may need to do a little grinding on the exhaust shield.

Yep. The Chinese knock-off stuff is all hype and junk. The proven products by design may be a little more expensive, but worth every penny if for nothing else, lack of stress and change in vocabulary habits? 🤣

Peppi-le-pew was the original inventor and created this sometime back in 2013. He advertised in in a couple other Goldwing forums under that user name and also exclusively with Cyclemax and then Ebay. It has been copied as well as duplicated by Chinese manufacturers but not without problems. There is even a basic website that he created.

I bought the real one a couple years ago and had no problem installing. Bike shifts better for sure.

It definitely works as intended!! Takes shifting from that old "3 on the tree" well worn shifter feeling to a nice tight shift click! And it's in gear! Majority of 1500's flop around and are loose shifting after a few thousand miles. This will keep it shifting very nice and smooth just like a bike should. I installed one on my 99 Wing with less than 30,000 at the time. It still improved the shifts a lot.
