I just purchased a used set of Markland floorboards with the heel/toe shifter for a GL1200 Goldwing Interstate. The installation looks pretty straight forward. However, the guy I bought them from told me I may need replace the existing rod that secures the engine guards with a longer one to have room for the forward floorboard mounting brackets. It looks like this rod just travels from one side of the engine to the other. So, if I need a replace the existing rod can I just pull it out and replace it with a longer rod? I'd hate to pull out the existing rod and find out that something inside the engine housing was connected to it. Any insight to this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
