I recently changed my insurance company from Sate Farm to Merkel Insurance. Merkel is a company that inusres motorcycles, atv's, sportcraft specifically and not cars or trucks. I was referred to them by my bro-in-law who has been with them for years. When I called them about my 93 Aspencade they were very attentive and courteous and faxed my policy copy within an hour so I could go ride that day. The rep made helpful suggestions and I liked the fact that my policy included an accessories coverage of up to $1000 for replacing chrome, grips, lights, etc that I add. The roadside assistance program was $5.00 which I thought was very reasonable as it is as good as my car insurance plan. I was wondering if anyone else has this company, has had any claim service through them and if so was the claim handled to your satisfaction or did you have a ton of hassle? Thanks...

Last year I switched to Allstate which lowered my rate quite a bit from Foremost. I added my son's bike to my two and still saved a lot. I'll check out Merkel when it comes due in January.

Regarding motorcycle insurance, just be aware. In some states, motorcycle insurance companies do not cover the riders medical expenses whatsoever. I live in Georgia. Back in May, my Wife was involved in an accident where she was severely injured. The motorcycle insurance only covered her bike, which was totalled. They did not pay a dime for her medical espenses. They say it is not required by the State of Georgia to cover medical expenses. My health insurance thru my employer paid the entire thing.

I had no idea that we wouldn't be covered medically if we ever had an accident. I guess I just assumed and you know what that means.

Just thought I would mention this. You may want to contact your insurance company and inquire about this.

I believe you mean Markel, I have been with them for about 5 years. I pay $360 a year for full coverage on a 2001 gl1800 plus the $1000 for extras and roadside. This is in Conway SC, when I move to Myrtle Beach it will jump to $400.
I did have a claim with them in March of 2011, it was a hit and run. No serious injury but the 1996 VT1100C was totaled, they paid full market value plus the $1000 for extras.
The pay out was basically what I paid for the bike, plus my medical, plus the time I missed from work. There was no hassle in collecting, I am sure they wanted to settle fast but I seen no reason to drag it out. If I remember correctly I went through my Health insurance at work but it was reimbursed 100%.
Thumbs up here!!!!

Up here we don't have as many choices. My Wing is insured with Avemco, and my RC is with another group that specializes in sport bikes. My local broker didn't even know the second company existed and that leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Wow $400 for a years worth is cheap. Up here in the Great North (Canada, Ontario) for a 2007 Wing and all the insurance options it's running around $1,500. And in my neck of the woods we loose about 3 months to bad (cold) weather.

I have not been riding for a while for various reasons; But I do know up here we get BENT OVER on all insurance! Bike insurance is worse because we can't ride 4~5 mos of the year! As far as I know..we can't get a 6 mo term for bikes either!...total BullS**T!!!

Don't get me started on the cozy deal the insurance co's & our government cooked up a couple of years ago....cut ALL payouts/benefits in half..BUT..the premiums stayed the same!

Then they tell us..it's a better deal.. we can "pick n choose" or "buy up" to the coverages we want...HUH???
I fell off my chair at that one....:D:D:D

I've had an insurance policy with Markel (Bikeline) for about 15 years and have been very pleased. I pay $536 for full coverage with $1000 deductable. I have never filed a claim so I can't comment about that but they are certainly prompt when it comes to getting information to you. I called the day before I picked up my new 2012 Goldwing and I had an insurance verification faxed and waiting for me at the dealership when I got there. MY policy arrived at home 3 days later.

I have had State Farm in the past and dropped them like a ton of bricks, poor service and high rates, will not go back.

Progressive is owned by a very liberal Socialist who I have heard nothing but BAD about so they were out.

I use Allstate and so far have been very happy with them.

Markel

Do they have an exclusion about participating in Ironbutt style endurance runs?
Oh and the owner of Progressive is Muslim and a big supporter of Obama. Working hard to take guns away from Americans. Don't know
if that's true or not...:p

I have Dairy Land and I pay $188 a year for 2008 air bag and a 2002 Suzuki DR200. I got a discount because I am a member of the Honda Riders Club and I guess multi bike. I have one claim with them and I have a great relationship with my dealer so he fixed my bike. He told me that if it were someone else he would not have dealt with my insurance co because he does not like the way they do business. They have screwed them over several times.
I had a claim with Progressive (I was unit 2) and they were great to me. I have heard the stuff about the owner as well but they treated me so well I called to see what they would charge me. It was double. So I called the lizard (Geico) and it was the same. I just checked to see how much adding a NC700X to my policy and it would double.
By the way my coverage is full and my deductible is $250. I do not have the medical coverage because I have health insurance. I dont know if my health insurance would cover motorcycle wrecks or not. From what I am reading this is becoming a problem. Dont know how BLAH BLAH care will effect it....

State Farm is VERY expensive for bikes in CA. I've had them on my cars and home for a LONG time, the agent is a close personal friend. When I got my Wing I added it to my other M/C insurance (I have a Dual Sport 450x too) and was SHOCKED at the cost so I called and asked, his response was to go somewhere else, that for whatever reason S.F. is not competitive on M/C's. I got full coverage from Geico on both bikes for less than $30.00/month.
