How's your endurance?

As you get older, do you find yourself a little less enthusiastic about riding in adverse weather?

When you know you are going to have extreme heat let's say...do you find yourself re-thinking things?

I remember when I was young I could play ball all day in the 100* degree heat....now....HELLS no!

What starts me thinking is sitting at lights or in traffic when it is hot...it doesn't even have to be that hot with all the gear on. I still go because once I'm on the road all negative thoughts disappear.

Wind doesn't bother me...I haven't ridden in the rain (except for a few sprinkles) yet.

All part of the adventure of motorcycling. Your thoughts?

I like the heat less and less myself. Try to ride early in the morning and home before the heat gets unbearable.

When I'm on an extended trip....if I could get the wife to get up and on the road super early...I would do it. Unfortunately, that won't happen so it's usually 8 am or so before we get out and then we get some of the afternoon heat later. Just this past Saturday, took the bike out for about 310 miles from home over to Half Moon Bay...down the PCH through Santa Cruz and on into Monterey for lunch.

70 degrees when we left at 10 am...80 degrees in Half Moon Bay but then when we turned onto the PCH...55 degrees and foggy. Monterey was fine but then of course coming back into the central valley in the afternoon it was above 90*. Okay as long as we're moving.
I used to ride when it was 100+
now, I start to ponder as it gets close to 95, it just hurts

cold, down to 38 doesn't bother me
I don't purposefully ride in the rain because of the other bone heads
other wise I don't mind it, you don't get that wet on a wing anyways

I agree...the heat "hurts" more than the cold bothers. Stay pretty dry on the Wing unless you stop I imagine.

yep, earlier this week, I had to ride the 23 miles home in the rain all the way
the wettest part on me was my butt, from setting on the wet seat, figured I would get drinched, but no
my gloves were wet on the back of my hand, and my left shoe was damp

had on my mesh jacket, shirt not even damp, and just hung my jacket in the closet, gets wetter from sweat

And now I know why the bikers were always lane splitting...not that they necessarily wanted to get in front...they were burning up!

the A/C doesn't work worth a crap until you hit at least 50

Funny how I notice stuff like that now. When I'm around town in the car and I see someone at a light on a bike all geared up...I'm thinking....at this moment, they are miserable. Part of the adventure though.
Mesh gear doesn't do a bit of good when it's 100+. I'd rather ride in the rain than when it's over 85.

Heat hasn’t bothered me yet. I don’t mind moderate rain when the temp is in the 80’s and 90’s either. But the cold? You can have, I hate it. I leave from NW NJ on Wednesday, going to VA. As of now my departure temp is 50-52 and I’m debating how to dress for the first 3 hrs of the trip south!
Riding in whatever the weather brings is all part of it. Although hot is the hardest for me. I find, from work, that if you stay out in it and not retreat to the AC you will endure it better. I usually sit outside to decompress from work which keeps me sweating. You can get soaked on a Wing too, if it's raining hard enough you will get plenty wet.

I'm more comfortable in the warmer weather than the colder. I used to be OK with 40'ish and higher but now I prefer to start my riding season when the morning temps are 55 and up. I don't think it's the temp as so much I don't care to put layer upon layer upon layer to ride for just pleasure.

Being retired has sure made me a sissy LOL

I’m 64 now but weather doesn’t seem to bother me any worse than when I was younger . I’m not a AGATT sort of guy so heat really isn’t an issue. No helmet law here either so if it’s hot I dress accordingly. Cold I can always put on enough to stay warm. I never liked leaving home for a ride in the rain but I don’t mind getting caught out in the rain .

I would endure any start conditions on a travel morning when departing a hotel, short of below 32° slipperiness. But I wouldn’t even leave the house if it was raining. I’ve ridden into my driveway through a shoveled pathway (snow) to get the bike to the garage before, but hope not to ever again. It’s hard keeping a goldwing in the tire ruts of a snow covered road to have any traction. But I made it. I like very warm because it keeps the arthritic joints freed up, my son hates the heat due to a medical condition. So you can guess how some days are better than others. I am sure as I get even older, that cold riding will end long before warm riding will.

My wife and I (she rides her own 1800) gave up on riding in the heat a couple of years ago and we rarely go more than 350 miles a day, down from 450-500. I'm 75, she's 70.

That's still pretty damn good! Did your wife ride pillion before she had her own bike? If so, how do two like the difference of that and her riding her own?

I understand what you are saying and it makes perfect sense, although I have upgraded to a 2018 GW Tour DCT and with it being automatic and 100 pounds lighter, with great air channeling to remove the heat under my fanney, I can't wait to get on it anytime. I am an old gezzer at 69.

The only rain I try to avoid is a very heavy downpour, like the one I hit near Jacksonville on my way back from NC 2 years ago. It was so heavy that cars were pulling over and one could only see about 2 car lengths ahead. And here in Florida, when we see consistent 90+ heat for multiple months, I feel like every stop at a red light is torture. I rode back from the panhandle once with the temp registering at 101 and humidity in the 90's. Just can't take that as well as I used to.

C'mon folks, weather is just part of the riding experience. If it really bothers you, ride in a cage. Okay, I agree, heat is worse than cold. Far easier to get and keep warm than to get cool. I wear a wet vest when I expect heat over 85. Works for about as long as I can go without stopping to pee. Realy don't like heat but even when crossing a desert I enjoy the views and overall experience. And look at the stories we get to tell about riding through hell and enjoying it!
