Hi, I run a 2004 GL1800 here in the UK, and I've suddenly got some problems with the headlights and turn signals - hope someone can help!

The issue came on suddenly during a long ride - no sign of any problems before.

What I'm getting is:
Ignition On
- all turn signals (front and rear) on constantly but very dim. The turn switch on the left bar has no effect.
- four-way flash doesn't work
- no headlights
- tail lights normal
- brake lights work fine

Ignition Off
- right-side main beam is ON
- all other lights are OFF

The bike drives fine and all accessories are fine.

I have previously had an issue with the starter switch, but this was fixed and this is a different issue I believe.

[UPDATE] I continued looking into this problem - and found a blue connector under the left fairing pocket showing signs of corrosion. I opened this up and sprayed contact cleaner through it, and now I have working headlights, and the four-way flash works too. However, I still have no turn signals.

Something I didn't mention in the original post was that I rode through heavy rain for a couple of hours yesterday, so I assume some damp has got in there - it's only corroded in one corner, suggesting there's a leak from the fairing above.

I can't be certain that the turn signal issue is related - I first saw there was a problem when the signals stopped working, but it was only when I stopped and checked over the bike that I saw the problem with the headlights.

Welcome. That connector will certainly be part of the ills. My guess on the signals is the switch itself but I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree when it comes to electrical.

Strange behavior like lights being on when the ignition switch is off is often a bad ground connection. When electricity cannot go to ground through the designed path it finds another way - often through another circuit like a light that should be off. Ground circuits on Hondas are solid green wires. Was there a green wire in the bundle running through the connector that you cleaned up?

Thanks all - I haven't cleaned up the connector properly yet, it was just that I found wiggling it made the lights come on so I gave it a good squirt with contact cleaner - think it will need a more thorough clean if I'm going to call it fixed. I haven't established yet whether any of the wires are corroded right through...

If I find a ground wire, is it just a case of bridging the connector block with a new length? I've seen this being done for the one under the seat, and it doesn't look like a hard job once I've taken enough plastic off to get to it properly.

This could take a week or two for me to deal with - so apologies if I don't respond to any updates. I'll be reading them, and will update eventually.

Best way is to bypass the suspect wire. Once the corrosion starts, it's hard to keep it form happening again since the connection was probably getting hot. Honda used the same wire for multiple ground connections. It's the C15, 14 pin, connector under the seat.

The turn signal lights might be the bad ground connection that occurs in the connector under the seat. On an American wing it would be C15 with 14 wires in it.

Thanks again - re the connector under the seat, that one looks fine - but I'm afraid I'll never know the cause.

In possibly one of the briefest memberships of a forum, I have to say goodbye - which is a shame because so many jumped in offering really good advice, typical of the Goldwing community.

If I had the bike as a hobby I would strip it down and fix it myself, but it's my daily ride and I need to depend on it - so I decided to sell it on and get something much newer. I live near the sea and the salty air gets everywhere, so electrical issues are a constant worry.
Sadly I can't currently afford a newer Wing, so she's gone back to the dealer I bought her from, replaced by a 2015 Crosstourer DCT. The dealer is aware of the issue and it didn't affect their offer, so they're confident it'll be fixed and back on the road.

I'll miss this bike big time, but I'm hoping it will only be for two or three years and then I might even be able to stretch to a 2018! :smile2:
