I got my 2001 in march and didn't pay much attention to the whine but after being around some other wings, I find it very noticeable. It changes with the rpm. Any suggestions? it has 57000 miles. Other than the whine it runs perfect. I thought maybe the alternator. Any help appreciated.

When and where do you hear the whine? Does it come through your headset? All the time or only when you set the cruise control. Can you hear it at idle when standing next to the bike?

the whine is all the time, start the bike and the whine is there, it increases with rpm. nothing to do with the radio or speed control.
It seems like it originates at the rear of the engine on the right hand side. of course that could be allusive too.

Sounds like you are talking about those lovely straight cut gears in our trannys.

It's usually the alternator! Some more noisy than others! Would have to hear yours to make sure what it is?

remove side engine covers. use mechanics stethscope to find it.
