Hi everyone,

My goldwing is coming dangerously close to overheating. I have about 667 miles on it so far and in rush hour traffic it came very close to pegging the meter. Is this an issue with this bike?? I have a full overflow tank and the dealer said they have heard of some of them having these issues. I find it hard to believe that I spend this much for a bike to have overheating issues with it brand new!! I have NEVER had an issue with overheating bikes on anything I have owned before.

Does anyone have a solution or something I should have them look at? I am wondering if the fan stays on all the time or not. could swear I hear it turning on and off even when the temperature is high. As far as I am concerned, it should remain on until the temp comes down to normal temperature range.

Any help would be appreciated. Do I have to drain the radiator fluid and use water wetter??

Thanks

... HOWDY ... I'M NOT SURE WHAT IS CAUSING THE HEATING COULD BE SEVERAL THINGS ... ie: BAD THERMOSTAT - WEAK WATER PUMP ect. ... IT IS NORMAL FOR THE FAN TO CYCLE ON AND OFF AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT CYCLE TEMP. IT IS SET FOR ... ONE SURE FIX YOU COULD DO IS PUT IN A MANUAL OVERRIDE FAN SWITCH ... I HAVE DONE THAT IN THE PAST WITH BIG DIESEL CONSTRUCTION TRUCKS WHEN WE WOULD GET INTO HARD PULLS JUST FLIP THE SWITCH ON AND KEEP THE FAN RUNNING AND WHEN IT GETS DOWN TO A TEMP. YOU LIKE TURN IT OFF AND LET IT GO BACK TO AUTO MODE ... JUST A THOUGHT ... ALSO WITH THE BIKE BEING THAT NEW IT IS STILL PRETTY TIGHT AND WILL RUN ON THE HOT SIDE ESPECIALLY IN SLOW TRAFFIC ... DOES THE BIKE HAVE A ACTUAL TEMP. READ OUT ??? ... AND THESE HIGHER PRESSURIZED SYSTEMS RAISES THE BOILING POINT AND THEY NORMALY RUN AT A HIGHER TEMP. IF THE BIKE IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY GO WITH THE DEALERSHIPS RECOMMENDATIONS THAT WAY IF SOMETHING HAPPENS YOU CAN DUMP IT IN THEIR LAPS ... HAPPY TRAILS ...

I have an 09 with just under 2k miles on it. The temp gauge runs just about in the middle and the fans cycle on and off in traffic at that temp. It is normal for the fans to cycle on and off as needed. Are both fans running? Is there anything blocking the radiators? I would take it to the dealer and have him run it until it gets hot and make sue everything is operating as it should. The bike is new and I'm sure they can find the problem quickly. Good luck.

The guy at the dealer was saying it is something that happens to the goldwing...I was like  come on it can't be. It has done it everyday this week. I refuse to pay this much for a bike to have to worry about it overheating!

Thats a load of bull... No water cooled engine should ever overheat from just sitting in traffic. I agree with the previous poster. Take it to another dealer and get a second opinion. If your still not satisified I'd ask to speak to a Honda Rep or get an email address where you can write and complain.

I have an '08 with about 6,000 miles and the temp. guage always stays in the same spot even in city traffic. I have never seen vary from the half pegged position. The fans do cycle on & off.

Well I dunno, I took it to Tahoe for the day and had no issues with the temp. Still, it should not come close to overheating no matter what the condition I think!

... HOWDY ... THE WAY YOU DESCRIBED THE HOT GAS HAS ME CONCERNED ... THE BOILING POINT FOR GAS IS BETWEEN 100-400* f. DEPENDING ON WHAT ADDITIVES THEY PUT IN AND THE OCTANE PERCENT ... THE AMOUNT OF FUEL IS IN DIRECT PROPORTION FOR VAPORS ... IT'S NOT THE GAS THAT BURNS IT'S VAPORS SO MY THOUGHTS ARE WHEN EVER REFUELING BE XTRA CAREFUL WHEN OPENING THE FUEL CAP WITH THOSE TYPES OF CONDITIONS PRESENT ... HAPPY TRAILS ...

sorry to disapoint you all butno matter what year wing you havevery long periods of stop ( mostly stop ) and go traffic will not flow enough air through the radiator to cool it down and high out side temps don't help. as long as a wing is moving it shouldn't over heat but long periods of idle it will get hot. i'll bet once traffic gets moving the temp of the bike drops as it should. honda didn't build excess capacity in the radiator and the over flow tank is for well over flow. bottom line the dealer was right, nothing wrong

... HOWDY ... DOUG HAS A VERY GOOD POINT ABOUT PARKING/STORING YOU'RE BIKES IN AREAS THAT HAVE OPEN FLAMES ie: water heaters - furnaces - portable room heaters ... FUMES FLOW ACCROSS THE FLOORS/GROUND ... ALITTLE COMMON SENSE WILL KEEP THE FIRE DEPT. AWAY ... HAPPY TRAILS ...

I now have 1200 miles on this bike 08.The fan comes on a lot when I'm at slow speeds. I've been doing a lot of practice with slow speed turns. I spend around half an hour or so just doing tight turns. The fan cycles on and off a lot. However there is no rapid change in temperature. there is no significant change in temperature either. After practice I go on the road open her up a little and the fan does not run. the temperature is a solid as a rock. IMHO, there is some malfunction. stuck thermostat or temperature switch. I'd insist on the dealer troubleshooting the issue. when it is right there will not be this type of symptoms. Keep us up to date on the results!

That is exactly where my temp gauge registers also. I've been through the BRP, Skyline Dr, Gettysburg and stuck on the interstate for 30 minutes in 95 degree temp and the gauge never goes beyone the mid point.

The '07-'08 Yamaha Grizzly ATVs had a bad problem with overheating gas such that the gas would shoot out the opening if you removed the gas cap when it was boiling. And I mean, shoot 5' up in the air!

Turns out, we riders figured out the rollover check valve was too strong and there was too much pressure in the gas tank so fumes could not escape when the gas expanded. We replaced them with something less resistant. Yamaha would never acknowledge the problem, although they provided new valves to the dealers to be used on demand.

2012 Also holds fine with temp and the fans cycle as well... IN fact when they turn on you swear you are in a jet liner getting ready to take off! :goofy:

Guys, you do realize this thread is over 3 years old? No idea whether the OP resolved his issue or not. Very little disussion since I've been here (4 years) about any inherant heat issues (other than the early 1800's that was dealt with by Honda) in the Wings that wasn't an air lock in the system or a leak.
