1987 Aspencade, I'm having a trouble when I down shift...especially from 2nd to 1st. No problems shifting up through the gears.
Fluid level appears good, Mobile 1 synthetic motorcycle oil changed at the beginning of every riding season.
Suggestions?

Is it a "clunk" or a "bang" or is it binding and won't go into gear?? Are you moving or stopped? Need a little more info.

I'm having to stomp on the shift lever to get the gears to drop. Didn't really notice a sound. And ideally it's while I'm moving (slowing down) but sometimes I've already come to a complete stop before I can get it to go into 1st gear. Thanks.

First of all, welcome to the forum.

Try bleeding your clutch. Mine was doing the same thing and the clutch wasn't releasing all the way.

Could be what Cantankerous says, or you might have a slightly bent shift fork. If it was the shift fork, it would probably be shifting both ways or all gears shifting down though. There's several things (spindle etc) that it 'could' be but I'd start with the clutch.

OR, just stomp harder, ya nitwit!
