I have a 1985 GL1200L, I have had a charging issue (too low) then one day it went up to 16 volts so I bought and put on a new voltage regular. It started and ran great 12.5-14v for a few minutes, then voltage dropped and smoke started coming from the regulator plug by the green wire. Any thoughts on what is wrong now??

Have you checked the stator at the three yellow wires for AC output, resistance and IB (Insulation Breakdown) this would mean one of the windings is grounded to the core.
How old is the battery?
The amps sound like they were climbing as the volts began to drop.
Check connectors for corrosion and tightness.
Green is the ground side.
When you purchased the reg/rec did you get the correct one from the shop?
