Use a sock

When I was in the military, I would take an old sock and slide it up over my boot. Then when I would get to work, I could just slide the sock back off and had little to no scuff on the boot.

a shoe string wrapped around the rubber part of the shifter will cure the scuffed boot blues

My father-in-law had a slip-on-leather gizmo he pulled on over his left cowboy boot. I'll ask him if it was something he had made or if it was store-bought. Worked for him. Personally, I'm a bit scuffed and lovin' it. -s
