I have been looking at a 1989 Goldwing. The owner's asking price is $4500. He said he arrived at that price because the retail book value is approx. $4720. He said the usual things have been recently done to it, past year or so. Timing belt, battery, brakes, tires. He did mention there are not many additions to it and that it is in very good condition and the mileage is approx. 47000 mi. I thought the asking price was high, I told him my highest offer would be $4000. Does that sound reasonable?

$4720 is the retail value according to KBB. A fair price is what you are willing to pay and he is willing to sell. Take a look at it and see if it is what you like/want. Good luck..

Ditto on TW's comment. If the bike looks good and he balks at your offer, continue the negotiations with a counter offer. Sooner or later you will come to terms. I personally think his price is in the ballpark but your call.
