Putting new tires on my 86 GW.

Do any of you get these balanced?

I was also reading in another thread about laying your bike down to get the rear tire off. I know I have had the rear tire off many times on other wings older than my current without ever having to lay it down. What is required for the 86 as I should be doing this tomorrow.

more to getting the tire off than laying it down.... .that is an 1800 thing.

Have to keep the tires balanced to get any miles out of them on the wing.
But easy way is with the ceramic beads in the tires. 1.5 oz and forget it.
best choice I made was going to beads.

I remember always getting them balanced and have talked to a few who say they don't. For the cost of $5.00 I will get mine balanced.

I put beads in everything! Even my truck! No more lousy static weights!

Here is a link to removing the rear wheel on an Aspencade. The procedure is about the same as yours. It is time consuming but not all that.

It's been 30 or so years, but I remember having to remove the saddlebags from my 1200 Interstate to get the rear wheel off. Yes, balance them for sure. Beads or centramatics over weights any day.

I have the new wheel on the bike. What a pain in the @$$ when you do this by yourself. I did not remove the saddle bags. and I still have the right side shock bolt to put in and it is being stubborn.

Now I remember having to remove the bags. It was not a hard thing to do, but did give room to work. Strange how age makes you forget the fun times.

Got it all back together and took it down the road a bit. Still have some electrical issues to work on but I should have her on the road this week. If it stops raining. Thank you for all of your input.

I work on bikes constantly as an occupation and have yet to balance an MC tire or rear tire using a CT. This is where I am suspect of the tire balance items people use as they never actually test the balance prior to adding the items. In general MC tires are very true and if the shake it's usually a tire that is not out of balance but out of round which can not be balanced. The option there is to return the tire in exchange for a new true unit. Rear tires need to be way out of balance before they will provide any noticeable vibration.
Most mechanics I talk to also will admit in general they don't balance tires on their own rides as it is a somewhat unnecessary exercise.

Changing the rear tires on the pre-2001 goldwings are much tougher as in many cases you have to remove saddlebag or have a table lift to perform this task. I avoid them like the plague.
