I am new the Goldwing world but have always wanted one! I am going to look and hopefully purchase an 1985 Goldwing LTD this Friday. I am told the bike is clean with no scratches or dents and has never been crashed. Runs excellent and has 60,000+ miles. They have put about $1000 in Markland chrome accessories and it has newer white wall tires. It comes with a couple replacement windshields, inter-comm system and boxes of extra parts.

Now the real issue. The Current owner purchased the bike and found the CB not functioning. It turned out to be a cracked fuse holder. Well after replacing the fuse holder and putting the covers back on they found the speedometer and on board air compressor not functioning. I'm guessing it will be a easy fix. However, could this be major problem that I need just avoid purchasing this bike?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your assistance in advance,

I just bought that exact same bike, even same miles! Price will determine how much of a problem you have. I don't know about the speedo, I suppose that could be costly if you need the speedo itself. If just a sending unit, maybe not so much, I am not sure. I can tell you that, even if the air compressor is shot, and will not work at all, you can get around that. Under the left side cover, I believe, is a fitting where you can pump air in from an outside source. Then on the front fork, top left side, (you can look down and see the tap while sitting on the bike at the very top of the left fork, the tap is facing toward the rear). Again, you can use outside air to fill.
Generaly speaking, I set my air pressure, and forget it. I have not adjusted the air pressure in weeks.
What are they asking for the bike? I paid $3700 for mine with everything working fine.

Thanks for the information. They were asking $3600 but we have agreed on $2500. I was told that both were working until they tried to repair the CB not functioning. I think I'll call him back tomorrow and get more details about the speedometer. I'd like to know if it is just the speed or the Tach, gear and trip are also out. I also plan on calling the dealer and getting their thoughts. As for the compressor I'm not overly concerned about that. But, I kind of need the speedometer.

Thanks again,

Disconnect the speedometer cable at the instrument cluster, rotate the front tire and see if the cable is spins in it's housing. If not, a) the cable is broken or b) the gear in the sending unit at the front wheel is stripped.
Tach cable: again, disconnect at instrument cluster, check if the cable spins in the housing. Cable could be broken or not seated properly at either end.
With these four problems (CB, compressor, speedo, tach) I'd push pretty had for the bike history. Best wishes.

I just received another email from the owner. Seems the tach, gear and trip LCD displays are working fine. Just the speed is out and air compressor is out.

Talked to the Honda service dealer and he told me that it could be a can of worms. They don't work on electrical issues on bikes that old. Gave me the number of another guy. I have a call into him. Honda also stated the repair parts are getting scare. I'm thinking it maybe time to back out before I get in to deep.

Thanks again,

it is an electronic speedo, as such, it should work on a square wave signal. If you can find wires for the speedo, it can be checked with a scope. If you do not have a scope, (I hear some people don't!) you can download a software scope for free that uses the sound card in your laptop computer. If I had to guess, I would be willing to guess that a new speedo would solve the problem. The trip counter has to work off the same square wave signal as the tach. I would look around for the most expensive speedo you can find, then contact the guy selling the bike and make a real low ball offer. I would tell teh guy what the dealer said, what the other repair guy said, cry about parts getting hard to get, the speedo being expensive and you don't even know if that is the problem, then say "The best I can do is $1200, because I will probably have to buy a parts bike." If you get it for that little, you can live with a can of worms! If you like, I can record selected speeds in selected gears, so even without a speedo, you can tell how fast you are going.

Yes, That is the bike I was looking into. No, Archie did not inform me of the starter issue. However, after getting information from Wing riders and talking to service shops I decided not to purchase this bike. I have no regrets as I picked up a 1984 Interstate Thursday night and have been riding everyday.

Good luck getting the starter fixed and enjoy the ride.

Thanks to all for the great information. I appreciate it!!!
