I have a 1993 GL1500 Aspencade that the starter will not disengage when the battery gets a little low.

When I checked the starter and reverse relay they both seem to be OK in that when disconnected they show open!

Does anyone have any other ideas what maybe the problem??

A couple things.

1st Welcome to the GWOF. 2nd if the relays are open then it would seem that voltage to the starter isn't your problem. Did you try physically removing the wiring from the starter to see if it would disengange? 3rd you say when the battery gets a little low, define little low & why should that be anyway?

If the other things check out I would think that the starter is mechanically sticking, but as always this is just one Ole Fossil's opinion. I'm sure others will chime in.

Both solenoids are good in that when check they are open and then close when 12v is applied to them!

I charged the battery overnight and it starts fine now!

What would cause the starter to continue to run if the battery is low after a long crank?

It's just a guess, but perhaps the low voltage won't allow the starter drive to release?
