Audition Ride

I had met a guy at the bottle shop (beer store) where I work a day or two per week for grins and giggles. (Well, it does support my beer habit too.) Marshall has a bike, that I have only seen once, but he sees mine all the time. He mentioned to me about doing a But Burner 1500 next month, but we had never been out together for a ride. So he wanted to ride down to the coast for lunch and Saturday looked like a good day.

We started out and the temperatures were in the low 80's, but some thunderstorms already around. We headed out, staying on back roads all the way, on a spirited ride east from Meltonville to Hwy 43 and south to Hwy 481 which took us to Raleigh. A turn east on Hwy 18 to Bay Springs and south on Hwy 15. Just past Stringer we turned south on 533 to Soso and Hwy 29 all the way down to Wiggins. We fueled up in Wiggins (Marshall's Yamaha gets about 180 miles on a tank.) and a short run down US 49 took us around a thunderstorm and a turn east on Hwy 67. At Hwy 605 we cut south to Gulfport and in town turned west on Pass Road to Ben's Deli. There we met up with WARWGN (Dustin) and his soon to be bride Laura who met us for lunch.

After lunch, temperatures were up to the mid-90’s by now, we stopped by Chandeleur Brewery for a beer tasting. A thunderstorm was just north of us and we had planned to go back on some back roads west of the main route, US 49. We then drove US 90 which is on the beach along the Gulf of Mexico to Bay St. Louis. Dustin cut off at Waveland while Marshall and I headed north on Hwy 603 to Kiln and then turned on Hwy 43 which took us north and west through Picayune and along the Pearl River to Columbus. Around Columbus on Hwy 13, which is pretty straight, we cut west on Hwy 43 up to US 84. We cut west to Monticello to again miss a thunderstorm, and then north on Hwy 27. We stopped at Georgetown for fuel and just got into a light rain. We decided to stay on that to I-55 and the light rain continued, but wasn’t enough to do anything but cool off the temperature to the low 80’s. We ran the fast way home to end the day at just over 450 miles.

Marshall rides fast, really fast. He does not ride with others and commented on some of my hand signals. Passing, slowing, etc. He followed me for a bit and led for a bit. Most of the back roads we were going 65 to 70, which was okay with me, but he definately can take the curves faster than me. Along Hwy 43 he left me in the dust. Itís like riding with Pete. Still, I believe that I passed the audition as at the end we stopped at the bottle shop for a beer and talked about the Butt Burner ride. (Silver - 1500 miles in 36 hours) We will ride up to Maine next month if I donít disappear on a fire.

sounds like some good riding you and marshall had. if you an marshall do a 1500 miler do you guys plan to document it and send paperwork to the IBA for a 1500 /24hr ride and certificate? if so they won't accept it because they say it is an extreme ride, you would have to do a SS 1000 first before doing any extreme ride

Did I miss a posting somewhere about Dustin getting an 1800?

He is going to send in paperwork for the ride. It's a BB silver; 1500 in 36 hours. He has the SS 1000 already. I'm just going along for the ride and adventure. We'll take two days riding hard and fast, then maybe 4 days coming home and smelling the roses.

Why, yes, you must have. He picked it up a month ago as a wedding present for himself. Laura commented on how much she liked it too.

So, we're to assume you both passed muster in the "audition"?
