5 gear slipping
Lately when I'm riding as I shift into 5th gear it feels like the tranny engages then skips for a second them engages again. Has anyone experienced this and if so, was it bad? It does'nt do it in any other gears, only 5th.
Appreciate any help.

yes.....I had that started doing it at around 75,000 miles.....I do believe you have the dreaded ghost shifting. Mine would only do it under a light load or heavy acceleration.

Try changing the oil if it hasnít been done in a might help....for mine it did not.

I traded her in for an Ď18. The cost to repair is around 3k.

I've heard of this before too. Try using a very positive (firm) shift into 5th. Might not help but just in case.

I've heard that running some Sea Foam in the oil for a couple hundred miles will clean the clutch plates. I haven't tried it.

Thanks for the replies. I've been looking at the new ones. I guess it might be time to upgrade.
Thanks again.

2005 gw
I've been shopping around in the off season for an 1800 since my wife's knees are better. I kind of flip-flopped around between bikes earlier while test riding several GW contenders.

Sold my 96 1500 (Red Neckerson) and bought a 2000 Yamaha Royal Star Venture. That fully loaded Venture Millennium with over stuffed seats was like sitting on a couch and a real asphalt eating monster on the open road. But - was just a bit too top heavy in parking lot maneuvers with 6 gallons of gas up top. Since I now have sold the Venture - I've been shopping for a 2005-2007 GW.

Two weeks ago the local Honda dealer let us spend about an hour in the saddle of a nice low mileage 2005 GW. Loved that bike but it ghost shifted out of 5th a couple of times. I tried using a firmer up shift but if I rolled on the throttle heading down an on ramp or passing, the ghost shift rattle, 5th to 4th would happened again. The salesman said this was news to him and they would check it out.

I'm leaning toward an 1800 but is there a particular year I need to avoid ? Recommendations ?

Thanks, Michael

2000 - 1500 se
Yesterday a friend and I returned to the dealership to look at a 2000 1500 I'm considering and while there, I asked about the 2005 GW my wife and I had ridden previously. It was still "Being Evaluated". The salesman then went through a list of reasons why an inexperienced rider shifts gears incorrectly. He then said he'd never heard of any 1800 transmission issues.

The riding buddy who was with me suggested a search on the internet for GW owner comments about "Ghost Shifting". The GL1800Riders Forum has a number of discussions on ghost shifting and repairs. Not a lot of opinions on ghost shifting here ?

That 2000 SE is looking pretty good. My wife says she actually liked Ol' Red Neckerson better than the 2005 bike. :)

Ride Safe - Michael
