Glacier National Park

My son and I are thinking about a ride from Spokane to Glacier Park this coming August, and taking the Going to the Sun ride. Any suggestions on what to expect, what to look for, best places to stay and good restaurants. We have made the ride to Cody over Bear tooth Pass and to Deadwood. Sturges etc. Any suggestions or information appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken

One thing I will submit for your review Ken is this.

Stay as close to the Park as you can and get moving early into the park. That way you head up the Going to the Sun road early before it is slammed with congestion.

As I think of other things I will add them.

Thank you.

We've stayed in Kalispel at the Hill Top Motel, a nice little Ma and Pa and reasonably priced. But it is a ride to the park. And the park can get nutz. Recommend you get reservation at head. Every time we stayed at the Hill I seen them turning folks away late in the afternoon.

And if you take I=90 out of Spokane Get off at Kingston, Idaho and head east to Thompson Falls, Mt a really nice ride.

I really enjoy that whole stretch of highway 200 from Sandpoint through Thompson Falls. Very little traffic and very scenic.

When you go up to Glacier make sure you are prepared for any type of weather regardless of what time of year. I have been up there when it was really cold/wet in the middle of summer.

Enjoy!

I rode it last year in August, really Smokey that time.
Also as mentioned it's like single file tourist trap.

Still beautiful though, ya have to do it once.

Enjoy

I had plans to get out there in Mid September last year but the fires burned out that plan. Friends of mine live in hungry horse and say from June to end of August its usually a mad house. Get up early and get in the park to avoid the stalemate, That way as you are on your way out you can pass up all the other's that slept in to late.

Yellowstone was our next bet and of all things...we get snowed out in a freak snowstorm, three days in the park turned into only 5 hours worth of being in there. They closed the park on us on our way out of the south entrance.

Glacier is back on the list for this year, hope the fires stay away.

We ride the Going to the Sun every year
Never gets old
Definitely get out early
Ride it both ways
The restaurant at the St Marys campground is great food and historical pictures
A stop at the hungry Horse dam is another good bet
Enjoy

every day is a good day.......some are just gooder than others

My wife actually suggested this ride to me yesterday. The surprising part is that she is very susceptible to acrophobia. Who knows, we might see you up there too.
