New Wing in central Minnesota

Hi All,
Just signed up yesterday, and just bought our first Goldwing yesterday!

My wife and I had talked for a while about someday getting a Goldwing for 2-up riding. We found this nice black 2001 with 45,000 miles at an auction yesterday. Got it for $4650. Not sure that's a screaming good deal, but seems to be below typical used price.

Have only had a chance for about an hour ride so far... lots to learn about this bike. I love how smooth and stable it is. And it really feels almost the same with or without my wife on the back. Pretty excited about having this now for longer trips. I have a Kawasaki Concours too, the 1000, that we've put a lot of miles on 2-up, but it's a top-heavy bike, and having a passenger on adds to that and often wished I was riding without her (shhhh...don't say anything to her!).

It appears from the paperwork that came with the bike that it was well maintained, but I still will change the oil and give it a good looking over... coolant, brakes and fluid, final drive oil, etc. But it runs very nice. Starter spins it over fast and starts easily.

Anything in particular to check out on this bike? Fortunately the bike was purchased by the original owner at my local Honda dealer, so I plan to call them and see if they will share what service work has been done by them. I did find the punch in the lower right corner of the VIN tag, which is supposed to mean the frame weld recall service has been done.

The one thing that bothers me about this bike is the front suspension is pretty rough - harsh - over small bumps like filled cracks running across the road. This is with or without a passenger. I'm wondering if this is typical? And if it is, there must be some common upgrades to improve the ride. Or if not typical, what could be wrong? Maybe I just need to check fork oil and fill to right height?

Looking forward to perusing all the info in this group!
Keith

Welcome from Virginia. My DNA traces back to Foley, MN. Regarding the front suspension, the stock set up is harsh by many riders standards compared to their other, or previous, motorcycle. I feel my '08 is harsh, but I'm not going address the issue until the fork leaks. There are " upgrades " out there

There are no recalls or issues with the 01 except for the brake recall which i would assume has been done. Front will be harsh if the ADV has not been disabled and that is a known issue with all the GL18's. You can change oil until you are blue in the face but it won't do any good as the ADV is stuck so you have limited fork movement. I just sold my own 01 and upgraded to an 03. You did OK on the purchase price. 45k is very low mileage so no items to look for due to that. Once you get to about 130-150k you may run into a dead alternator but that is an easy replacement and not costly. Keep in mind under certain conditions it will get hot and may even overheat. Typically riding at 18-20 mph with a tail wind especially at high altitude will send the heat gauge souring. This is due to the fans being backwards, in most cases you will be fine.
Other than that change oil once in a while and ride, no other routine maintenance is required as these things just never stop running.

Welcome for sure. I was disappointed in the front forks compliance when I got my '09, but I'm used to it now and will deal with it when it becomes a necessity. In Honda's words "it works"; in our words, "it doesn't work that well" but it does get the job done
