Just Keeps Getting Better...

One of my old school chums (former riding buddy, hockey pal, Flatts brother...) dropped in to see me this morning. Another of my long time friends, Tom, riding partner, hockey team mate, Flatts brother has terminal cancer. Tom and Doug were two of the 5 of us that rode to Sturgis in 2001. His wife (who had other issues of her own) took her own life just weeks back when he told her the state he was in, and he's been in a downward spiral ever since. Nobody deserves to have their life torn up in this fashion, but it seems life can be very cruel and unfair at times. Tom has downplayed his illness with all of us and he finally admitted to Doug a couple days back how serious things really are. I spoke with Tom just a week ago and he was upbeat (or so it seemed), was completely lucid and he spoke about his treatments going well and things were fairly positive. Not true. He has refused treatment and is basically just surviving under his sister's care. I haven't been up to see him yet, but after Doug's visit this morning, if I don't go soon, I won't get the chance. So I will call Betty (his sister) and see if he's up to a visit on Friday. Not one of the most pleasant things to look forward to, but it's something a friend just has to do. Tom just turned 65...

Daryl, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend Tom. I know it will be difficult but I hope you get to see your friend. You may be the ray of sunshine your friend need on a dark day.

I'll be praying for you and Tom for strength and peace.

There is a Japanese term "giri" that in general refers to obligation or "duty". Friendship is the personification of giri. Translated to actual meaning it means "the burden too great to bear" or in western cultural understanding, "the debt that remains unpaid". I will do my best to pay that debt, God willing.

Very sorry to hear Daryl.......as we grow older we’re going to see more of this....it’s sad but true....Elaine and I have made a conscious decision after losing so many people to that horrible disease, and my own diagnoses 3 years ago.....”Make memories!” We only have one life, so enjoy every breath!

Prayers for your friend and hang tough for him.....
