Colorado 145 Closed for Now

Just a heads up if you are planning on riding Colorado's Highway 145 between Dolores and Telluride. Just north of Dolores two very large sections of cliff above the highway came to rest on the highway last Friday, May 24. The Colorado DOT has closed the highway and begun blasting the chunks of cliffs to begin hauling them away. There is some rumors that CDOT may be building a single lane detour around them until they can be cleared. There was some interesting video on Facebook showing some of the blasting they were doing to reduce these three story high rocks to a manageable size. Check with CDOT before you head that direction.

Rock in the road -

Hey DesertRat - When you said a rock slide came down on to Co. Hwy 145 you weren't kidding. The local news reported "A giant rock the size of a building is blocking Hwy 145 near Telluride that destroyed a large portion of the pavement. The road is closed "indefinitely."

We love riding that Silverton, Telluride, Ouray area. It is not uncommon to find a basketball size rock in the road as you around a blind curve during the spring time thaw but YIKES. We're heading up that way in Late July ......

There's a difference when - "a rock is in the road and there IS a rock in the road"

But the real question is; did they find Wiley E. Coyote under the rock?

Saw an aerial view, probably from a drone, which shows two dwellings on the opposite side of the road where those cliff sections came from. If there was anybody at home when they came down it probably sounded and felt like the world was ending.
