Exhaust Tip Replacements

Unlike most of the posts I read here, I want my exhaust noise LOWER. No fun after the first 500 miles in a day. Maybe it is my imagination, but I think that the noise level on my 2006 Wing was lower that that on my 2012 Wing. I was thinking that may be because the exhaust actually stops on the 2012 under the extended saddlebag and may cause an echo there. Has anyone else experienced this?
I was considering turn-down tips to keep the sound from under the bag, but everything I read is that the noise level is actually higher with turn-downs. I also read that the Show Chrome version loses the shiny chrome look within 2 years.
What experience do any of you have on this matter?

I have the show chrome turn downs on my 2015 and I had them on my 2001 GL1800 for about 8 years and the chrome never turned on either.

I had these on my 2009 and they worked fine and never discolored.
