Finned Oil Filter Housing -

It was time for a spring tune-up in preparation for a couple of back country camping trips in Arkansas. This year as the weather mellows I later plan to head toward the Bitterroot National Forest in Idaho.

Once I had completed a good once over, clean-up, tune-up and oil/filter change on "The Dud" (Ol' Beuford T Dudley - 3rd resurrected 1200) - I replaced the oil filter housing with the same size multi-finned cover from a Honda 750. This low budget part was found to help dissipate the heat generated during my low speed, off road adventures. The only requirement to install the 750 oil filter housing behind the gravel shield on my 1200 motor was that the cooling fins must be rotated vertically to the 12 and 6 o-clock position. Here are a coupe of photos -

CB750 - Oil Filter Housing

Hey Eric - The finned oil filter housing I installed was from a 1982 Honda CB750. What had me initially looking at this part swap was because the CB750 air cooled 4 cylinder used the same oil filter part number, "O" ring seals, interior relief spring and mounting bolt assembly as the 4 cylinder Goldwing. When I checked the two housing cases against each other - the outer mounting surface, circular interior diameter and inside depth were all identical. I found another one on Ebay for less than $10 shipped.

I have also helped install a CB750 oil filter housing on a friend's 87 Goldwing. We used a medium toothed round file to add a very slight notch to the center two upper cooling fins. Could be over thinking things but this was to allow a small clearance as a safety measure. I guess there may be a marginal assembly difference between our bikes. Or things could sagging a bit from age.

Good Luck, Michael

I have found and brought my finned oil filter. I will wait until summer before putting it on. The morning ride to or from work is from about 28f to 36f.
