Question 1981 Goldwing / $1500 cdn / worth it?

Hello,

I recently came across a 1981 Goldwing, some 93K miles on it. As this bike is 38 years old, seem to run fine with a bit of blue smoke at startup…. what is it worth? Is it worth it? What would you recommend before a ride - a good check up for sure on breaks and such.

Thanks!

Richard/codeputer

p.s. I usually ride a BMW GSA, but I want to see how these bikes are for a ride ….

I owned an 81 Wing and loved it. The blue smoke could be worn cylinder rings or valve guide seals. I suspect the seals because they probably are brittle after all these years. Without seeing the bike I can not tell you if it is worth it. Just remember, a lot of parts are going to be hard to come by.

It's not the destination, but the getting there.

First of all, welcome to the forum.

If the current owner doesn't have maintenance records it is overdue for a set of timing belts. If you can do the work yourself it isn't hard and the belts are reasonably priced. If you need to take it to a mechanic, if you can find somebody to work on it, it can get expensive.

Was the smoke on the right or left cylinder bank? Parking an early model (4 cyl) Wing on the sidestand when running or very warm engine will sometimes allow oil to migrate past the seals and into the combustion chamber of the left bank. That is usually the source of the smoke. My 1200 was brutal that way.
Ont the other hand, 1100s are fairly easy to work on (except for the stator) and there isn't a lot to remove to do most things. Valves are screw adjust so a little patience and care is the trick there. Not sure about rings or seals though, never done it.

grab all the kicks you can baby, you only make this scene once!

the ride on an 1100 wing is pretty good if the suspension has been upgraded but don't expect it to be like your GSA, same with brakes. to have any HP you'll have to keep it reved up, price wise it might be ok but personally I would look for a 1500 wing or a first gen 1800 wing
