2002 GoldWing purchase weld recall ???

Good Morning...just joined. Have had quite a few bikes..never a Goldwing. Have found an impeccably maintained '02...{purchase not finalized} 15k miles... never towed anything. The weld recall was NOT done, and I would like to know thoughts on wether to do it or not. Not sure if it is an open recall that Honda would pay for, or need to be done at my expense... but more importantly, is it safe not to do? Because it is my understanding the body panels, need to be removed to do any re welding, and i have concerns that the bike's condition cosmetically will not be the same when done. Which is why i am interested in it in the first place, and willing to pay the asking price $9k. This bike looks like a brand new 2002. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks

If memory serves me correctly, any recall has to be done at the manufacturers expense, and I also thought the weld recall was changed to a frame replacement? Budoka might chime in with more facts.....

Itís been a long time since the frame weld/replacement recall has been discussed.

Maybe this will help....

If you can get the VIN check this site and give them a call to see if they will cover it: http://powersports.honda.com/recalls.aspx

The frame weld recall was a safety issue and Honda is still on the hook for it. Take your VIN to a dealer near you and they will get it done.

I called Honda about a recall on a petcock on my 07 Shadow. They said a safety recall never expires, so Honda will cover it. But if I remember correctly some were having cracks in places other then what Honda was having re welded. some cracks were happening on the frame behind the passenger floor boards, I had an 02 and it was a great bike. But once I sold it and got my 08 I didn't have to worry about the frame anymore.

They never changed it to a frame replacement that would be very expensive. Some of the frames were replaced but I think that was due to the fact that they had cracked before the re weld.

Did you ever get the recall work done? I have a bike with the same issue. Recall was never done. It's been 16 years since then. Honda and NHTSB records only go back 15 years....

Some of the bikes were having frame crack in places other than where Honda did the re weld. I had a beautiful 02 and had the re weld completed but never felt safe on it so I sold it and bought an 08 in 09.
