There's lots of low mileage bikes of all brands out there. Too many "new" riders take the plunge before they understand the reality of owning/riding any motorcycle long term. Weather, traffic, insurance regs, skills...the reasons are legion. As to Goldwings being maybe more prevalent, perhaps many see the Honda model as initially less intimidating (no lifestyle pressure etc) than a certain other brand. Sometimes the romance isn't quite as what was expected.
Good perspectives here
and may I add:
Many who find out I rode cross country reply back with a naive admiration as if I had just done a glamorous deed.
The fact is, at least for me, that riding cross country is not that glamorous at all. Sometimes I am tired, lonely, scare sheetless of the weather, bored, cold, wet, hot, dangerous sometimes...it is not a movie to tour on motorcycle.
Its more like a challenge and you right budoka, people eventually find out its not as easy as it looks on TV or in the illusion of their minds.
I happen to love it because, because, well because...I don't know why exactly. I guess the strain of it all prompts personal growth, or deep inside I get a lot out of the solitude (like if I attended a spiritual retreat)...lets just say its in my blood. I just gotta do it. I ask myself that question many times but words seem to dilute the motivation for touring on a bike.
But for sure, it ain't all fun and bubbles.
