: 2010 Grand Tour of Virginia
Rapier 06-14-2010, 11:41 AM I don't know if there are any others that are doing the Tour of Virginia, but here's what I've done so far (the points in red are the ones that I've been to). It is a pretty cool idea to get us to see parts of the state that we'd normally not think of going to. Note that I didn't care for the riding around in Richmond - too crowded and confusing, even with the Navi system. Stupid one way roads combined with a seriously challenging layout of the cross streets.
Anyways, here is my map:

billcarr_ 06-14-2010, 12:52 PM Im jealous!
Two Wheel Wing 06-14-2010, 01:34 PM Heading down to NC tomorrow, so does it count if I stay on 81? I see lots of numbers on that route...
Rapier 06-14-2010, 01:43 PM Well, you'd have to be signed up for it and have the passport booklet that they send you in the mail.
Be careful on 81, btw. The little bit that I rode the other day to get the most northern point was rife with hazards - trucks, speed, construction, etc.

chopin114 06-16-2010, 06:35 AM Mz. Vickie and I are invited to a crab party July 4th somewhere down in the Northern Neck area. I don't do crabs, but I do do rides.

chopin114 06-23-2010, 06:47 AM I see a lot of stops along 64 to Williamsburg. Maybe we should bee-line " down " to Williamsburg on 64 and grab the tokens along the way. A " return " trip up 17 looks more scenic, albiet destitute of tokens.
Rapier 06-23-2010, 07:41 AM Some of the points are not open on Sundays, so I'll get out my passport booklet and check to see which ones we can bypass. I can always go down on a Saturday and get them later.
Edit: Well, I take what I said earlier back. Turns out that if we do the 64 corridor and then turn up across the Bridge-Tunnel to the DelMarVa peninsula I could get about 10 points done in one day! We'll have to see how things go vis-a-vis Mz. Vickie's plans and such...
chopin114 06-24-2010, 06:20 AM Well ? What do you think about the plan that you head East and I head South and we meet in Yorktown ? We will greatly miss the ride down the penisula with you and Loni, but on a Sunday we , and you, don't want to be heading home with the beach traffic. At least on this side of the bay there are alternate routes to find our way home on.
Rapier 06-24-2010, 07:51 AM That works, Maestro. I cleared the plan with Loni, so we'll head out early Sunday morning and head out over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, then down to Chincoteague Island for a bite and the two Tour points there. Then it will be on down to the Bridge-Tunnel. There is a point at the bottom of the peninsula, so once there we'll call you to see where you want to meet in Yorktown.
chopin114 06-24-2010, 07:55 AM Half a ride with you two is better than no ride at all.

Hey Rapier that Maestro thing is really catchy isn't it?:D:D:D
I don't know what time you guys are getting to Chincotegue but when the little lady & I were there we ate at Bill's Rest. & it wasn't because of the name Lee but the food was excellent. Just one ole fossil's opinon.
Enjoy the ride & be safe.

Yeah, sure is, Bill! You get author recognition for that one.
Loni and I will look Bill's place up. Thanks for the recommendation!
Be safe on your long ride, Bill. You're making my planned trips look wimpy, but I'll do a long one next year (Four Corner Tour and can't wait!)

chopin114 06-24-2010, 04:51 PM Seems like every one has been somewhere except me. How would an HVAC fellow from PA know of a little restaurant in Chincoteque ?

Don't let my common vocation deceive Maestro. I have a little lady that knows how to bring a touch of sophistication to an otherwise simple lifestyle.
Yeah that's right this ole fossil get's around.:D
Rapier 06-27-2010, 11:17 PM Just got back from a 515 mile day. We departed Woodbridge, VA, travelled across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, down through the DelMarVa peninsula to Chincoteague Island, Va. We then headed south through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel to Norfolk, then followed I-64 to Newport News and met Chopin and Ms. Vickie for the return trip home. We opted to take Rt. 17 instead of the I-64/I-95 because of traffic issues,
Have to say that we experienced just as much heat on this trip that we cared to handle. It was 102 degrees in Newport News/Yorktown and we had been travelling into that all day (it was 90+ in the Cambridge, MD area when we passed through at about 10:00!) Have to say it was nice to see the sun finally set and let some of the heat dissipate.
Fossil, we had lunch at Bill's (opted for light fare as we were still less than halfway through the ride), but we both liked the food. Thanks for the recommendation!

My pleasure. Glad it worked out.
Rapier 08-14-2010, 11:56 PM Bump. Updated map in OP to show status as of 8/14. Getting it done, bit by bit, but from here on it will take some creative scheduling or overnight trips, I think.
fossil92 08-15-2010, 07:26 AM It's been said "Good things come to those that wait"
You will fill the map when the times are right my friend "Patience Grasshopper".
Happy Riding.
chopin114 08-15-2010, 07:37 AM I'm getting these calls at 7 p.m. " Hey Lee, I'm in Newport News. I picked up another point and I should be back by 11:00 or 12:00 tonight. " Insanity?
Rapier 08-15-2010, 10:14 PM Bump. East coast of Virginia complete! No points to visit east of I-95 any more! Oh, and well over halfway complete.

chopin114 08-21-2010, 10:04 PM How do your tires look ? Got any tread left ?
Rapier 08-21-2010, 10:13 PM They're doing very well. Better than I had expected, truth be told. You'll get a chance to look at them in the morning and I'm all for another set of eyes on them.
Rapier 08-22-2010, 08:52 PM Bump for update as of 8/22. Remaining points are southern and south western VA. Now's when the planning and timing get critical!

chopin114 08-24-2010, 07:49 AM We earned that point. A beautiful long ride in the low hills of the western edge of Virginia with a bit of monkey butt thrown in for good measure. http://maps.yahoo.com/#mvt=m&lat=38.051934&lon=-79.768393&zoom=13&q1=Warm%20Springs%2C%20VA

Bump for updated map as of Aug 29.
chopin114 08-30-2010, 05:38 PM The below " update " is the reason he didn't ride with me on Sunday. I let him have his " Day of Rest ".
Rapier 09-09-2010, 11:03 PM This weekend is slated to be the end of the tour for me. Leaving Northern Virginia tomorrow afternoon, riding about 5 hours to the Wytheville area and then staying overnight there. Saturday will be the points in Wytheville and those that are south and southwest of there, then back to the hotel. Sunday will be those that are along the VA-NC state line, including the Virginia International Raceway, then a dash back home (another 5 hour ride). Total mileage for the three days is going to be well over 1000 miles, I'm sure.
Rapier 09-12-2010, 11:18 PM On 9/12/2010, I finished the Grand Tour of Virginia. 82 different locations spread out all over the state. Some days were incredibly hot (that would be the day that I visited the Eastern Shore and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel), some had torrential downpours and fog (parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway) and others were picture perfect (most of them, truth be told.) The awards banquet is scheduled for Nov 13, so we'll see how I fair then as far as the prize drawings go.
Final Map

fossil92 09-13-2010, 05:53 AM Congrats my friend. Maybe you should make a completion map of Va. I'll bet yours would be the only one colored completely.:D
chopin114 09-13-2010, 06:53 AM While we were headed to The Air and Space Museum for the 911 ride on Rt.28 a dark red 1800 with fog lights filed in behind us. In my rear view mirror I could see his safety green vest and black helmet. He pulled in about three bikes behind me. I got off my bike and walked back to greet you. Well............it should have been you.
Rapier 09-13-2010, 09:29 AM Congrats my friend. Maybe you should make a completion map of Va. I'll bet yours would be the only one colored completely.:D
That's probably true, Fossil. I would have to say that with the points where they are, the odds of not travelling through every county in Virginia are pretty long. This tour program most definately took me to places that I'm not sure I would have gone without it. A few places I've got in mind to go back and visit and spend a lot more time at (Natural Bridge, some of the caverns, the D-Day museum and an Armored Vehicle museum that wasn't on the tour, but saw a sign for it as I was traveling.)
Rapier 09-13-2010, 09:32 AM Oh, and while I'm thinking of the Virginia completion map, I "could" add NC to my state map. Turns out that to get to the Virginia International Raceway, you have to cross into NC for a mile or two and then come back north to enter the gate.
Nah, I'll save that for when I spend more than 2 minutes in state! hehe
chopin114 09-13-2010, 04:18 PM We appreciate your honesty, but rules are rules: If your two tires cross over the state line you were there.
Rapier 09-13-2010, 04:36 PM Yeah. Lee? Where's the "official rules" for the map(s)? ;)
chopin114 09-13-2010, 04:46 PM Ask " joe in calif " .
