I have a 1987 goldwing interstate. With the cost of gasoline, I wants to know if there is a way to convert the system to use regular or what effect I will face by putting regular gas in the tank without a conversion kit if it exist.

try regular gas if there is no difference in how the engine operates from the gas you currently use keep using regular. my older 750 hondas run better with premium gas so for simplicity i put premium in all bikes except my little dirt bike

Check you owners manual, it should run on regular 87 octane, if it doesn't ping than your O.K.

i have a 83 gl1100 that i bought from my freinds dad. he has been filling it with regular gas since he bought it and it runs great. i occasionally put premium gas in because it seems to run better with it and i think it cleans the engine out but i dont think regular gas should be any problem

Most of what people believe about the benefits of premium gasoline are myths. See, for example:

If your engine isn't pinging on regular you're just wasting your money by filling up with premium.

read the owners manual. use the fuel listed by the manufacturer. 87 octane is a "fast " burning fuel . the ECM will be programed for this and the engine will run fine. Premium is a "slower " burning fuel and again the ECM will be programed for this. In the event a driver puts premium in an engine designed for regular they will hear spark knock "pinging" and the fuel will not burn completely. This will cause the cylinder walls to be "washed " down with raw fuel and will cause premature wear. conversely, regular gas used in an engine designed for premiom will experience premature detonation of the fuel which will result in piston ans possibly rod damage. Bottom line is.... use the fuel recommended by the manufacturer, or listen to and experiance the "fun" of expensive noises, coming from the engine!!

It's good advice to check the owner's manual and start with the manufacturer's recommendation. Technically though, you've got it reversed. Pinging or knocking is caused by premature ignition, which can happen if you use regular gas in an engine designed for premium (i.e., a high compression engine). Putting premium in an engine designed for regular really won't hurt the engine - it will still ignite when it's supposed to (when the spark plug fires). It will only hurt your wallet.

Well my 2008 GL1800 is designed for 87 octane regular and I have used gas with ethanol in it, but am hearing some bad things about future damage from ethanol, so when I find the old type regular gas I use it.(without ethanol).
