anyone have an idea of mileage when you should think about changing timing belts?20,000 40,000 ???

Sometimes it's age more than mileage, if your bike is 15 years old but only has 40k on it, I would probably change them, also if you don't really know the history of the bike it's good peace of mind just to change them.

thanks matt ,according to the maintenance log that came with the bike ,they were canged in 05 at 60,000 miles. so i should be good for a couple years

it sure does but both my wings are at 50k and belts will be changed next spring cause i don't know the history of them

I changed the timing belts on my 93 GL-1500A at 55,000 miles. I changed them because of the bikes age and one was starting to separate or delaminate, it was only a matter of time before it broke.

I just changed mine. '95 Aspy 30K; 15 years old. The consenses I found on internet:
80K or 8 years.
A couple of pointers: You do not have to disconnect any water hoses, dealing with the hot air carb heater hose, I removed the left engine guard and pulled the hose out of the way. I found getting the right slack setting on the new belts a little difficult. Timing no problem at all!
My old belts felt dead, but no wear appearent.

A little late but, the mileage/age is like asking which is the best oil. I have changed them from 40,000 to 92,500 and found each and everyone in excellent condition. Personally, I don't believe there is a correct answer. :confused:
If you are changing them yourself I would use either of the following. :)

Goodyear 40275
GatesT275
Napa 250275
Note that the same timing belts fit all GL1500 models from 1988-2000.
