I can't talk to the 1500 or 1800, but for a 1200 the answer is YES

hello and welcome to GWOF bigboy10, yes the engine on all 1000,1100, and 1200 wings need to be removed to replace the stator

You could have a conversion kit put on instead of replacing the stator and regulator. If you change the stator;be sure to change the regulator also.I am having a conversion kit put on my 1984 Goldwing instead of the changing the stator and regulator. The part cost $660;but if it goes bad again it will be a easy install.I have heard mixed reviews on replacing the stator. Some say it last a long time;others say that it last less than the first one.Good luck by all means.
