: VTX and Wing
gene-oooo 04-09-2010, 09:42 AM I have owned a 2003 VTX 1800c for awhile now and I love it. For longer rides I bought a 2006 Gold Wing and discovered that I love it too. A completely different experience. My plan was to sell my VTX after I got the wing. But..........I cant sell it. Im keeping it for shorter rides and just because I love it. So my wife thinks Im nuts, and maybe I am, but I am now the proud owner of the 2 best bikes in the world today. I am a happy man. Can anyone relate?
MTCSATX 04-14-2010, 08:33 AM I know what you mean, I have a 2006 1300 VTX and just bought a 1993 Goldwing. Each bike is a different experience. I would love to keep both but I know my wife won't go along with that.
Two Wheel Wing 04-14-2010, 08:43 AM Sounds like you are collecting quite a stable of rides. Each is different and a great machine. Enjoy them both and ride safe..
oldsmores 04-14-2010, 10:32 AM I've had my VF700C keeping the Wing company in the garage, and love riding it - nothing like twisting the throttle and running it up to 9000 rpm or so, hanging on for dear life.
I can't justify hanging on to both, so I'm doing the next best thing: selling the Magna to my son. At least I can go visit and take a ride once in a while. :)
bobby2407 04-16-2010, 08:00 PM i know what you mean,i have a custom 05 roadstar, bought an 05 wing mainly for the wifes comfort & fell in love with it, and i just finished building a harley custom hardtail chopper! 1 will have to go (star or chopper) but i'll wait till economy picks up,i refuse to give'em away
djoyner 04-25-2010, 12:00 PM I have an '06 VTX 1300S and I recently purchased an '85 GL1200 Interstate. While I have used my VTX for cruising and touring, I plan to do a lot of riding on the Wing as well. The Wing will become my 'daily rider'. Even though I have to wear a suit to work everyday, I have the hardbags to store my jacket and laptop (which I can't do on the VTX).
vtxcandyred 05-04-2010, 04:07 PM I too have a 2002 VTX Candy red retro I bought new. I have the Ultimate Four piece Big Boy seat but that did'nt help my wife. I bought a 1985 Aspencade a year ago and we went on an 1800 mile trip. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. The 1200 lacked a bit from both of us on it and pulling a trailer. We had a hard time maintaining speed on the uphill ride. The couple we went with have a 1999 Valkerye Interstate and they had NO problem like that. So a few weeks ago I sold the Aspy and bought a 1993 SE, loaded. It has a few quirks that I'm sifting through but all in all I think I bought a gem. My wife thinks I'm nuts for keeping two bikes too BUT I bought the X brand new and it owes me NOTHING. And on a day like this I'm glad I still have the X because the wing is down for belts replacement. It would have been done this weekend but I got the wrong ones, so the right ones are on on their way to me as I post.
chopin114 05-04-2010, 04:50 PM I had an 06 VTX(C) for three years. Not the best double up bike, but I didn't buy it for that reason. I bought it because it was the only bike in the showroom at the time that I knew my wife would afford when I came home to surprise her with what I did. Surprised she was !!!!! Then last year I decided that she had endured enough of my selfishness ( and I wanted something to go farther) so I convinced her that a Goldwing is a bike we could share together. End of story is : I got a Goldwing ( color her choice); Paid in full ( her choice ); Up-grades ( it's all for your comfort, dear ) And She hasn't even rode on it yet ! I think Mz. Vickie was happy to sell the VTX for $4,600.00. IT"S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. Foolish woman.
javarider 05-04-2010, 04:54 PM Sounds like a common theme here. I have my Ace Tourer which I love, but was uncomfortable for my wife. Now have the '88 Wing which she is enjoying very much and I am riding most of the time. Kept the Ace for my son to ride along with me. She loves that we have good father and son time together so.......have to have them both now! Love it when a plan comes together!
fossil92 05-04-2010, 09:07 PM I can't resist. I have to jump in on this topic. What's wrong with mutiple bikes? i don't see a problem.;) Some guys even have more than 2, right DDB? In my case even though I love my wing sometimes I just want to hop on something & go for a short blast or if you live close to work like me.
I've had my VF700C keeping the Wing company in the garage, and love riding it - nothing like twisting the throttle and running it up to 9000 rpm or so, hanging on for dear life.
That's exactly why I bought my 700S Nighthawk.

That's exactly why I bought my 700S Nighthawk.:cool:I see absolutely NOTHING wrong with having multiple bikes. I wish I still had my 900 Customs. What a screaming machine.

vtxcandyred 05-04-2010, 09:23 PM Disclaimer: Some men are married to a woman who have an innate appreciation for motorcycles. That would be MY wife. Since I've bought the two different wings in two years, and went on a successful road trip last year, and she enjoyed the ride, she has a newfound likeness of my bikes.

You give me hope. When I get Mz. Vickie on the bike for a ride, I'll stop envying others. I hope.

In my wildest dreams did I EVER think I'd get my wife on my bike. I started small. I had a few 550 fours and just went to the end of the street. My street and the street that intersects my street are both dead end. I went SLOWLY and let her know ahead of time what I was going to do. I made sure she stayed right behind me and not counter lean when I did. Pretty soon we were going around the block, which is four miles. One mile each street. That was about fifteen years ago, and last year we went up through Michigan and across the Macinaw bridge into the U.P. Drove along Lake Michigan and into Wisconsin for a night. Went to the Dells for two nights then into Marion Iowa to see our son and daughter in law for a few days. Then it was back home to make it a week long trip. Start slow and small then expand. NEVER scare her until shes COMFORTABLE on it.
javarider 05-04-2010, 11:02 PM Good advice. I tell new passengers to make a choice: I can either make them be scared of bikes forever or fall in love with the. I can give them whatever kind of ride they want. Of course they have always chosen the latter and they have never been disappointed yet! I am trying to win more good people to the sport of motorcycling, not scare them off.

See boys, if I would have known you guys when we were all younger I could have saved you a lot of trouble. The secret is you have to find, meet, Fall In Love with, have her Fall in Love with you (That's the hard part!) a pretty little Country Farm girl that's tougher than a groundhog or YOU! and everything just works out. My little lady has been riding with me since she's 17 on the back of an OSSA 175SDR to boot. I used to cover her in mud & coal dirt from head to toe. :D:D:D:D:D:D
Check this out.
chopin114 05-05-2010, 06:25 AM Nice chick magnet, fossil.
Commander K 05-05-2010, 04:43 PM I currently own a 2002 Z400 Suzuki, enduro, and I bought the Wing new in '08. I ride with my twenty-one year old boy with my Wing and his Kawi, Ninja. We have a really good time riding together. I ride the enduro's with my youger son.
The other day we experienced a pleasant riding day along with a system of bad weather which included a sand storm and terrential rain. But, it still was a memorable and great riding day. When my seventeen year old boy turns eighteen next year I will let him put his 2009 Kawi enduro on the road, and the three of us will be riding. Then my plan is to sell my 2002 Suzuki enduro and buy a chopper-bobber type of bike for the bar hopping or just short rides. That is my game plan - I just can't be vocal about these plans to the wifey. When the time is right I will take her out to show her the bike I want and tell her I want this for when I ride with the boys. Should work - wish me luck.
billcarr_ 06-09-2010, 08:18 PM Sounds like a paln, it ought to work. :)
bobby2407 06-09-2010, 11:04 PM i have a nice chopper for sale
hothouse 07-15-2010, 02:35 PM I just sold my '06 VTX 1300 C to buy an '01 Goldwing! Loved the VTX but Vance and Hines pipes were to loud for my wimpy ears! :o
Grandy 07-23-2010, 10:59 AM The more the merrier, I have my 08 Aero and my 06 Wing. Life is good
dirtdobber 09-04-2010, 08:59 AM When being real busy and not being able to ride for a while. You finally get time for a putt. Go out check the bike and wow a flat tire or it is worn too badly to go where you were wanting to go.
It is good to have multiple bikes. I have 3. VTX 1800, HD Ultra, and the wing.
I know I can ride when I open the shop doors.

Ralphumor 09-17-2010, 12:15 PM I truly would rather have multiple motorcycles than multiple women :D. One women = good esp when you have been with her for 1/2 your life and she, honestly makes you a better person. More than one motorcycle = good esp if that one women just shakes her head and says your crazy (an thats all).
I just recently went from 2 to 1. I have the best motorcycle in the world, however I want a ST1300. It is gonna take a couple more years but I will park one in the garage and the ONE women will just say...Well this is a public forum I cant write what she will say! :D:D
joe in calif 09-18-2010, 08:17 AM Have fun riding with your boys but remember bar hopping and bikes don't mix,
rigginray6 09-18-2010, 08:20 AM I like both of my oldies! I like riding the magna around for shorter trips one up but i love the ride and comfort of the wing!!
billcarr_ 10-12-2010, 12:59 AM Yes I can relate, my wife thinks Im nuts also. I have an 04 Wing bought new and has 112,000 miles on it. I just bought an 07 1800R VTX. It has windshield, leather bags and floor boards, and a Mustang seat. I rode it for 30 min as a test. Took it out on the freeway at 85, I couldn't beleive how smooth it is. Yes I can relate! I cant wait to go for a 200 miler! BTW the exhaust is box stock, ill leave it that way too. First time I have ever had 2 bikes.
dirtdobber 11-15-2010, 10:46 PM I suppose I fit in here somewhere.
I have several bikes. The plan was to sell the other bike at the time I purchased the new bike. Every time I think about putting 1 up for sale I go for a ride on it and change my mind. Being retired an living some of the dreams I had when I was young is fun.

My VTX is under the blue cover behind the Goldwing
It's under construction again.

DonaldLL 11-30-2010, 12:27 PM I just bought my Wing about a month ago. My girlfriend and I both had bikes 5 yrs ago but sold them. Fast forward 5 yrs, I buy mine and she says she's OK without. Well we went for our first ride with her as the passenger and when we finish up I ask her how she liked it. She says "It's not the same". Translation = "I want my own motorcycle"
I ain't no fool! So now we have 2 bikes... here's her new (2009) VTX1300R
Ralphumor 11-30-2010, 08:51 PM That sure is a pretty motorcycle(so is your girl friend :D I mean no disrespect). I like the rims only thing it will be a bit time consuming to clean them. I attempted to teach my wife to ride, even sent her to MSF class. Some girls just prefer to leave the driving to others.
Ride safe-both of you!!
DonaldLL 11-30-2010, 09:48 PM Thank you Ralphumor... no worries and no offense taken. Almost everytime we'd pull in to a gas station, the fellas would gather around her bike and just marvel over the bike and the bling (yeah right). I expect it will be much the same this time too. All I know is I could spontaneously combust and I'm not sure anyone would notice ;).
Actually she insisted on NO SPOKES. Her 750 Shadow had spokes and she loved the way they looked but hated cleaning them. She actually liked the wheels on her new bike.
IronLou 01-24-2011, 08:44 PM Wish I could have kept my VTX 1800 Retro (red) and the 750 Shadow (wife's) but was running out of room in the garage and there ain't no way they were staying outside. That just wouldn't be right. They were both great rides, each served a purpose. Loved the power and style of the VTX and the Shadow was great for short trips around town. If I could have kept them all I surely would have.
The Wing easily takes the place of both of them. I do miss them....but I'm starting to get over it.
billcarr_ 03-10-2011, 04:04 PM I have an 04 Wing, bought new and kept in shape for 113,000 miles. 5 months ago I bought an 07 VTX 1800R and I'm crazy about it. I almost sold the Wing but couldn't quite bring myself to buy the "for sale" signs. Now I'm cleaning out space in the garage for 2 bikes. Best 2 bikes in the world! Under 300 mile trips, take the X, for real rides take the Wing!
One look at the new Wing (2012) I can say I won't be tempted. Why, mine is paid for and just as good, (prettier too). I wonder if they cured the "wing wobble"?
willmax 03-10-2011, 05:01 PM I had a 2006 VTX 1300, which I sold when I bought the 2005 Wing. We also have two Kymco 50 scooters for runs to the grocery store and a 2007 Burgman 650. I bought the Burgman for my wife, but ride it around town more than she does. Handles great and very fast off the mark. I miss the VTX 1300, but didn't have room in the garage for 5 bikes.
billcarr_ 03-23-2011, 06:25 PM 5 ? Nice. Life just isnt fair. We are forced into eliminating one of 5 bikes. Sarte was right
( I think ).

djoyner 03-23-2011, 07:18 PM I have an '06 VTX 1300S and I recently purchased an '85 GL1200 Interstate. Even though I have to wear a suit to work everyday, I have the hardbags to store my jacket and laptop (which I can't do on the VTX).
I recently found a great CL deal and picked up a '95 Interstate with 76k miles. After changing the timing belts, coolant, oil and filter, I put a set of E3's and I'm ready for a trip to the Americade, the Wing Ding and the west coast later this summer.
VTX owner 2 06-09-2011, 11:59 PM I too have two bikes a 94 goldwing Asp. and a 06 VTX 1300R for long rides with the wife we're on the Goldwing when I with the fellas the VTX, both gives me great rides I have a fairing with a radio on the VTX so I'm riding good
fyimo 06-10-2011, 08:27 AM I became the owner of two motorcycles two days ago with one being a 2003 1800 VTX that I had it Triked in 2005 and two days ago I bought a 1994 GL 1500 Goldwing that was Triked. They are two different riding experiences for sure and I will probably keep both as I can see the the Goldwing used for really long rides and trips and the VTX trike used to ride locally with the American Legion Riders and The Southern Cruisers which are the two motorcycle groups I belong to.
The Goldwing just came into play as I got a call from a friend that it was for sale in a small town near me and for the price being asked ($1300) it was a steal so I couldn't pass it up. It came with a matching trailer, everything works, has 47957 miles on it and all it needed was a new battery and I ordered a new front tire for it. I ordered an owners manual for it and a sevice manual as right now I don't know that much about them. I'm putting regular gas in it and I'm not even sure if it needs a higher garde.

fmyers007 07-28-2011, 09:53 AM I have an 07 VTX 1300C and a 10 GL 1800...my wife thinks I'm crazy but I love them both....She has a VT 750 C Shadow Spirit....I told her that we could sell her bike! lol
LarryinSeattle 07-28-2011, 12:04 PM I bought my 94 Wing to try it out. I sold my Volusia (cruiser) after it sat being ignored for 6 months. Then I sold my Helix as I was no longer riding that bike for in town jaunts.
Then I bought a dual sport. I am happy with my choices and I have always had at least one bike, sometimes two and at times three.
I always said the use of the bike will decide its fate.
GWTrike 08-17-2011, 10:08 AM I usually never feel comfortable with more than one bike, especially if they overlap in usage as most of mine have in the past. However, as long as I keep the trike kit on my GL1500, I expect no competition with my Harley Ultra Classic; with the trike kit, the 6cyl GW is primarily for 2-up and trailer pulling, while the Harley is primarily my daily ride.
twostrokes48 08-19-2011, 08:57 PM In the first 40 years of riding, I never had more than one bike at a time. Never saw the need for more. After I retired I was back on a wing with my 84 Aspy. After my wife rode on the back of a friends triked out 1500 she thought that would be better for our long rides (500 or more miles). So I got a GW trike. Then I found a 72 Cb750k2. Having had my best riding memories on my 74 Cb750, I just had to have it. So there I was with now 3 bikes...Then crash goes the trike, I wasn't thrilled with the ride on a trike anyway, so compromised with the wife for the 98 1500 with the landing gear set up. She was fine with that. Could not justify two two wheel wings, so the 84 Aspy went on the "for sale" list. It is now spoken for and should be gone in a couple of weeks. That is assuming the guy comes up with the money as he stated. Should not be a problem, have done business with him before and made sales too him of double the amount we are talking here ($3500). So I'm still a happy camper. Have the 98 wing and the Cb750, two great rides.
billcarr_ 08-24-2011, 01:35 AM Flimo, i like them both but the Wing rig is really pretty.
