Occasionally, after riding for a while and stopping at a light, once it's green and off I go, I get a sharp, cramp like pain deep in my hip socket....straightening it out is the only thing that resolves it...I have to quickly shift up to 5th and then let my leg get real straight...any ideas?....love the 1500......

Yep, I had that happen a couple of times and it hurts, feels like the hip is slipping out of joint Stretching the leg down and straight usually fixes it. Not to concerned about it since it only happens now and then not frequently.Could be caused by having the leg bent up for awhile on the pegs.I use the hwy pegs and stretch out whenever I can,
it does'nt seem to happen then.I rest my heels on the hwy pegs because the pegs arn't
far enough forward to put your feet on them without bending the knees again.

Yes,happens to me too. Hoping my new pegs will prevent it.

I have had that happen to me also,I am sure age has nothing to do with it.

Left side or right side ?

left is bad, right is not good. That's is why I had a custom seat and pegs made. :(

This was not multiple choice question ! My right side gets the deep hip ache. I was looking for a pattern here !!!!!!!!!! Ok. When you stop, do you favor your left or right foot ?

I try not to, it is not the bike or what side I use, on my shadow I use my right foot, goldwing left foot, this is most of the time. My rotation is almost gone in the left hip.

As the brake pedal is always on the right side there is a natural tendency to place the left landing gear down first. If I had to have a choice between the right and the left side strength, I would take the left side, even though I'm right handed. Do you know why Catholic's were taught to write with the " right hand " ?

Who was seated at the " Left Hand of God " ? It is no coincidence that Roman Catholic school children were encouraged ( forced ) to write right handed. This has serious theological implications !

Hey Fossil, your no spring chicken... I saw you trying to swing that leg over the Wing the other day... LOL.. We're not old, just have some "aches and pains"... When you on a Wing you feel like a kid..

Guys, sounds like the problem ya'll have is called sciatica. Happens to us "old Farts" and a heck of a lot of the younger ones to. What happens is the ole vertebrae (spine) especially the lower Lumber began to deteriorate and develope arthritis. This causes the spine to "mash" on the nerves thereby causing pain that runs down the butt to the back of the knee and sometimes to the foot. Best just to deal with it and take some pain meds or have injections in the back about every 3 months. Anyway...welcome to aging! Like someone earlier said...when you get on a "Wing" you feel young again!

Take your wallet out of your back pocket Gentlemen, this post just reminded me about the causes of pressure on the Siatic Nerve when the spine is tilted. All professional truck drivers and Equipment operators know this. Its the most common cause of lower back problems which extend down through the nerves in your legs.
I survived 35 years of operating equipment and driving trucks.
If it were'nt for knowing this I would'nt have lasted without a
major problem in my back.Ask a doctor if you need to about tilting
your spine sitting on a wallet in your back pocket.

Okay so let's get some things straight. I hear what Robert says & it makes perfect sense except I never have enough in my wallet for it to be big.:D

Hey Fossil, your no spring chicken... I saw you trying to swing that leg over the Wing the other day... LOL..

Yeah Yeah Yeah. I don't need you to tell me. I'm just trying to convince myself. You know I've got 9,000 miles coming up & you guys are talking about getting sore after a little riding. At that rate I'll have meds going in through an I.V. drip (get a visual).

And Finally what's with that avatar & the hardtail?

Old habits are hard to die, but I'm going to try a compromise to " bstar's " advise. Starting today I'm making a conscious effort to use the rear left pocket for my wallet. Worse case is I can balance out the effects.

Yep, for many years. The highway pegs help. I usually have a problem after an hour of riding so I pull over and walk around for a few minuts. Slows me down a bit but if I was in that big a hurry, I would fly.

Why do you think they make the antena so high on the Wing. It's to hook the I.V. to while riding.. LOL.. If the wife needs one you can hook to the CB antena.. Ride safe and have a great trip..

I'll bet watching me ride is more than worth the price of admission. What I do when the hip pain happens, which is a lot, is stand up on the pegs momentarily. Probably not the best way, but it is quite painful. Sometimes, I just pain through it, and it goes away pretty quickly, but when I can, I stand up. It always helps, but I'm not always in an area I can do that. Traffic with a lot of lights is sometimes painful, as I feel it isn't a good idea to stand up. I ride ATC's and ATV's a lot, and thats where I found this cure. Looks goofy on a large street bike, though.

That is just the reason my seat is 4" taller and set back a little with pegs lowered 3". :)

Sitting for a long time can also twist a hip. If it happens frequently you can develop scar tissue. If the pain persists, ie you feel it in your lower back later, try a chiropractor.

One traction move on your leg/hip and the pain will go away.

Regular maintenance and it won't come back.

I've been practicing " bstar's " advice as stated in his post below and it may be a coincidence but I believe I have noticed less irritation in the right hip area. I keep my wallet in the left rear pocket now. This Saturday I'm going for my longest ride- to- date so I'll have a chance to note improvements.

It is nice to see that I am not the only one that this happens to, (pain loves a buddy) and I do not see it doing better with age. for me it seems to happen more now but I can get it to pass with my feet up on the hyway boards, but if this is all that god throughs at me when I ride I will take it.

After years of lower back problems and the hip cramp/pain misery, I went to a foot doctor who made plaster casts of my feet and ordered custom arch supports. Pretty expensive, but when I got the supports I would have put him in my will. My arch problems were causing me to twist and make adjustments to my walking, that was putting pressure on the siatic nerve area.
That was 11 years ago, and I have not had those problems since. I have worn out those supports (and the doctor died), so I'm looking for another that does the same thing. All the newer docs build a soft support that is just not the same thing.
Knock on wood, I have had any problems yet, and quit those supports about a year ago.
