Mt Rushmore is a must see. If your into sports there is the NFL HOF in Canton, OH and the MLB HOF in Cooperstown, NY. If your going through TN you have to do the Tail of the Dragon and Cherahala Skyway, VA has the Blue Ridge Parkway / Skyline Drive. All of these places have websites you can check out. What two wheel king said, also The Arch in St. Louis, onish country, Branson Missouri, there are so many nice places to see. We did a trip way back many years ago in September from So. Calif. to Portland Maine, We were gone 4 weeks and it was great. I wish I could remember all the stuff we saw.
