Jeanne and I went for a little ride this afternoon. Went up 173 to 2828 then to 16 back to Bandera. Then we decided to stop at DQ befor going home. Leaving DQ I laid the Green Wing down on a hill. He went down on his left side with the top of the bike faceing down hill on gravel. After I was over being mad and had blamed it on Jeanne (Didn't work) I rememberd the section in GWRRA Gold Book about picking up a Wing. A few seconds later he was back in an acceptible position. Slight scratch on my left hand, Jeanne twisted her ankle a bit and no damage to the Green Wing. ALL-IN-ALL, A GOOD DAY.

Glad you were both okay. Broken stuff on the Wing can be replaced, broken stuff on people is another story. Ride safe..

It is amazing how quickly it can happen isn't it Lonewolf. Glad you & Jeanne are fine after all I 'm headed your way in June so you may have to be around for an escort.;)

Oops! I gather it wasn't a confidence shattering experience? That's a good thing. Some one on this board once posted " I never owned a bike I didn't drop. " What did Jeanne do to cause this, you can use it with us, were on your side.

I took my wife to a co-rider seminar at Wing Ding several years back and they were told that everything that happens on or to the bike is the co-riders fault, :mad: (of course this was a comedy class)
If Jeanne would of said she didn't want to go for a ride you never would of got the bike out and so you never would have dropped it!! Makes sense to me!! :)

It does happen fast. All is well and then all is on the side. Im happy no one was seriously hurt. Don't get in the dumps over this and take Jeannie for a ride soon. Don't let her stew about it. Life is good.

Lonewolf--I did the same in Mason on the square. I was loaded for a weeks stay in Kerrville and backed in to curb off camber and couldn't hold it. I won't do that again[off camber]. It seems to always happen in frt of the whole town not when you are alone HAHA---Glad both of you are alright!!

Hay!!!!! Yea lets blame it on the icecream. In 50 some years of riding I have laid it down several times. Probably wont be the last. It was a suprise to see how easy it was to roll it back up. Jeanne is ok with it. She got back on. Was kind of quiet on the way home.

hey lonewolf glad yall are ok.i have dropped mine many times,first thing i taught the wife keep your feet on floor boards no matter what she cannot stop the bike from falling it stays at an angle than she can step off,,,,hope this helps,,,ride safe

Well I was out last weekend near Johnson City (some lovely back roads in the Texas Hill country) and had to cross a small river crossing. Like an idiot I decided to not follow the rut created by car tyres, but to ride on the hump between the car ruts (It was shallower!). Not thinking, the hump in the middle was covered in algae and the minute I hit it the bike spun more than 90 degrees in a clockwise direction and tried to deposit, the bike, myself and my 12 year old daughter on the back into the rocks down stream.. Fortunately the crash bars worked great and there was no damage to the wing at all, but my daughter was a little shaken up.. First time I have dropped a bike in 20+ years!!

A sad sight indeed thrasherg.:( Glad no damage to either of you or your nice looking ride.
The opportunity may not have presented itself, and you may already be aware, but there is a specific way to pick up a fallen Wing, which minimizes damage.
I have been riding Wings for many years and recently dicovered what I should have been doing, instead of dislocating both arms and throwing my back out.
Google "how to pick up a goldwing".

Thanks Strat, I know the correct procedure for lifting the Goldwing and have practiced it in the past, unfortunately the road was so slippery and the bike was so close to the edge of the road that I could not use the technique, so 2 of us managed to pick it up whilst keeping our feet in the tyre worn grooves where there was no algae!! :)

Looking at the pictures it looks like a good technique for cleaning the engine and underside of the wing..:eek:

Dramatic pictures, Thrash ! Their is something unsettling about seeing a Wing tilted 45 degrees ; but relieved to see the rider up-righting his own bike. Thanks for sharing this episode!

I got very worried when the front wheel went over the edge (as you can see we had to spin the bike around to get the front wheel back onto the road, before we could lift it), It doesn't look much but its about a 3 foot drop with big boulders, it would have really hurt if we had gone over (I love off-roading on my YZ450, but not a wing!).. Lesson learned, drive on the worn section of a crossing where there is no algae!! Everyone else got across without incident.. Didn't want to hijack the thread, but did want to say how well the crash bars work on a wing..

That had to be a MAJOR "Pucker" moment when it slid out from under you!!!
My question is this, why did no one else get off to help you besides the one nice fellow rider?

I would have probably dropped my bike trying to get to you ASAP!

Hi Buzzy, just to answer your question, we where two couples with our kids out for a ride, each bike is 2 up (rider plus kid passenger) the entrance to the crossing is a steep hill and both the lady riders where worried their bikes would fall over if they tried to get off and help me. The other gentlemen (Don) was able to park his bike and help me, more people in the water would really not have helped any more so I am happy the ladies decided to stay on their bikes and wait. We stopped shortly afterwards for an ice cream and to laugh at my misfortune..
