Hello. I'm looking at getting a 1983 GL1100I. What should I be aware of and look for before purchasing? Thanks for the help.

I have an '83 GL1100i as well. With these 25 year old beauties, age may be a bigger factor than straight forward mechanical problems. Seals, exhaust condensation/rust, steering head, brake lines & stuff like that. Has the oil & filter & other gear oils been regularly changed? That's probably the biggie. My GL has 108,000 km (~65,000 miles) on it, and just now I'm beginning to experience some age related expenses. But I've owned my bike for 20 years, know it well, and stay on top of these things. It's good to go for a long time yet. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Johhny. The bike only has 39,000 miles on it. It looks to be in decent shape. It started right up. I haven't ridden it yet but am thinking of taking it to a mechanic to have it looked over. He's asking $2500 for it. Does this seem fair? I was looking for a bike with an intercom, which this does not have. Are intercoms able to be found for these? I would also have to get used to the hell-toe shifter which I've never used. Thanks again.

i hear some have rusted around the sidestand. if you do not know when the belts were changed then change them along with a thermostat and the usual maintinance

I tried to get the radio package that fits in the left side of the fairing of my '83 a couple of times, but the asking price was around $1,000 and I didn't go for it. Why not consider these intercom thingies that attach to your helmet? Battery operated and voice activated, I think. But you could also ask your passenger to just lean forward and talk to you, and you talk back over your shoulder. Works for us. My wife even squeezes my leg once in a while when she likes what I say. I think $2,500 is a very good price for an average '83 that was properly looked after. It's always buyer beware, as you well know. Cheers.
