How often to change spark plugs?

Have a '98 Aspy with 127K and don't know the history. Running good, no miss but only appx. 36 mpg. Thought maybe new plugs would help the mpg. What say ye? Which plugs do you recommend.

35 to 40 mpg is about the average with a 1500. Some get more, some less depending on your driving habits. So you are in the range. I sure it would not hurt to throw a set in, but then again, if it ain't broke...... Your choice. Ride safe..

After doing some searches some guys say they are getting 40-50k from a set of plugs. Seems a little high to me, but that's what I found.

I've been using NGK5129 DPR7EA-9 it's the same as the OEM plug. I change them every 30,000 miles or so. I always have a couple sets in the shop, if the mod strikes I change them sooner.
If you haven't already you might want to change the fuel and air filters while you are at it. Then you know where you are. Just a thought.

Ron, I have K&N air filter and have just cleaned and reoiled it. Where is the fuel filter?

fuel filter can be seen from the fuel access door, easily changed when the false tank is off.

Golddigger:Whacker is right. You have take the seat and the false tank/radio/gas door, unit off.
Here is a tip that might save you some grief when changing the fuel filter. In the past I've found some that have a tiny sharp little ridge on the input and output fitting it runs the length of the tube, you can easily feel it, it is the result of injection molding in manufacturing. Use some fine sand paper and remove all of it. I know of at least three bikes that have leaked gas because of this, simply sanding the edge off solved the problem

They are the plastic pieces that are below the radio. They are in place of the fuel tank seen on older/smaller bikes.

Gold Digger: It the thing that cover the Air Filter box, it has the Am/Fm radio, tape player and the door to the gas cap. You had it off when you cleaned your air filter.
On ever 1500 I've worked on you have to remove the seat to get at the two acorn nut that hold the back end of the unit down, there are also two levers inside the gas filler door that have to be moved forward to release the unit from the bike. Also be sure to remove the plastic filler that are attached to the unit that act as fillers around the fork tunnel.
