Smile Replacement keys

The prior owner lost all the keys for the '84 Interstate that I brought home the other day.

How do I go about getting replacement keys for my bike?

I tried to do a forum search on the subject but with not much luck.

This may end up being a job for a good locksmith. Not even sure what key blanks work with a bike 27 years old.

if i remember right there should be a key code on the bottom of the ignition switch

This could explain why my local Honda dealer just sent me an email telling me to bring in the ignition switch!

Take one of the saddle bag lock or the gas door lock to a lock smith,it will be easy as the ignition is Just loads of fun to get out and back in. good luck Hal

Like bud said I would take one of the saddle bag locks or the gas door lock to the locksmith. If I remember correctly you would have to use a drill to get the stud rivets out of the ignition lock and then find a way to either replace them or use some type of bolt to put it back in. This was done at the factory to help deter theft. You could just haul the wing to the locksmith and maybe he could work on the key in the parking lot...

I do hope you got a clean title with the bike! Did you purchase it from Guido in a back alley?


The key blanks for the Goldwings were the same for the 1200 and 1500. There were only the type 1 or type 2.

Harkgold, there IS a number stamped into the ignition barrel that corresponds to your key set. The reason you need to take the whole barrel in is to verify that the keys that you get cut do indeed work. They are notoriously famous for not being good keys once cut. If you have the ingition barrel with you, you can immediately check and see that the key does (or doesn't) work. And of course there is the locksmith alternative. Replacing all the locks and the ignition is costly (and a PITA) if you can even get them for your bike now.

2010 GW Replacement key

I went to Lowes and had two 31r keys made. .38 cents which is worth the gamble. They both work great and will also lock the steering with no problem at all. I took a side panel off and plastic tied one to the bike in a discreet place in case of losing one.

I just had a couple of new keys made for my GL1500 (one for my wife, and one to cut up & turn into a removable gas-door knob). The locksmith pointed out a code on my original Honda key, and advised that he could make a working key solely from that code - no copy key required.
